Albemarle museum opens exhibit highlighting military life of Dorothy Bellamy
The Museum of the Albemarle will be opening a new exhibit that will highlight the military life of Perquimans County resident Dorothy Bellamy.
Bellamy, who was born in Martin County, North Carolina, served as a medic in the United States Army Reserves from 1974 until her retirement in 1988. She later moved to Baltimore, Maryland and worked for Union Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s attendant.
Bellamy then joined the Army Reserves in the 92nd Field Hospital as an E-4 because of that training, which she completed at Fort McClellan, Alabama.

She had a basic background in medical knowledge which helped her with her Army duties, and she continued building her knowledge through Army training. As a medic, she also learned such tasks as setting up field hospitals.
In 1985, Bellamy moved to Atlanta, Georgia and was stationed at Dobbins Air Force Base. Before her retirement as staff sergeant in 1988, Bellamy received many awards over the course of her career. Two of her sisters and her father also served in the military.
The exhibit honoring Bellamy will open on May 11, 2023 and will run until January 10, 2024. It is free and open to the public.
