While having done everything in her power to have the collection ready in time for Milan Fashion Week, Alberta Ferretti lamented the fact it would once again be seen remotely, as she felt her research into materials and special treatments, raw-edge fabrics and the movement of the clothes would be best assessed in real life.

No matter, the video telegraphed all of the above and the collection succeeded in fulfilling the designer’s expectations. “I didn’t want it to be frivolous and an end in itself, I was aiming for concrete, high-quality designs,” she said. “I also wanted to convey the amazing craftsmanship and techniques our artisans offer.”

The outerwear was beautiful and was available in plenty of options — from sleek structured trenches with defined shoulders and shearling coats to more fluid, wide coats edged in blanket stitching reminiscent of ponchos. A belted cobalt blue coat was a standout.

The color palette spanned across different shades of petrol, emerald or olive green and gunmetal gray, but also veered into earthy ocher, brown and beige.

The silhouettes were clean and rigorous, in tune with the times, but there were also cocoon shapes and fuzzy textures embracing the body. Models carried their bags hugging them as for protection, wearing platform boots with chunky heels.

While fully covered up in extra long pleated skirts or soft and comfortable, high-waisted pants, oozing determination and empowerment, Ferretti’s woman was also sensual and very feminine. Case in point: a ruffled neckline peeped out from a ribbed knitted top, adding a delicate touch to an otherwise austere look.

Ferretti offered plenty of leather designs, too, such as a suede shirt and skirt combo or a roomy, boxy jacket, as well as flocked and tie-dyed denim suits.

Evening gowns — always a Ferretti forte — exemplified the craftsmanship the designer wanted to highlight. A group of long dresses with lacquered and sequined embroideries or woven ribbons were testament to the artisans’ talent, alternating chiffon transparencies, silk softness and glitters. There were also a few bolder, gold sparkling looks. After all, aren’t we all ready to dress up for a reason?
