Albuquerque woman dies weeks after being shot while traveling on I-40

Jan. 6—A 24-year-old woman shot late last month while traveling on Interstate 40 in Albuquerque has died.

Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said Florencia Rivera-Guerrero died of her injuries in the last week, making her the 97th homicide victim of 2023.

The Dec. 26 case is being investigated as road rage.

Gallegos said police were alerted to the shooting after someone drove an injured Rivera-Guerrero to the area of Central and Tingley. She was initially taken to the hospital in critical condition.

He said detectives traced the shooting to I-40, between the Big I and Rio Grande. He said around 9:40 p.m., Rivera-Guerrero was in an SUV headed west when someone in a black SUV opened fire, striking her.

Gallegos said the person driving Rivera-Guerrero took her to the area of Tingley and Central and told a police service aide who was working at the River of Lights.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 505-242-COPS.

Gallegos also identified a young man killed in the last week of 2023.

He said Damion Alday, 19, died Dec. 27 in Northwest Albuquerque.

Officers responded around 3:50 p.m. to reports of gunfire at Sundoro South Park on Endee Road. Police found Alday shot to death.
