Alcorn County shooting suspect surrenders

Jan. 24—CORINTH — A man wanted in connection with a Tuesday morning shooting in Rienzi has turned himself in at the Alcorn County Sheriff's Office.

Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell said Demario McGaha, 39, of Corinth surrendered around 4 p.m. on Wednesday after avoiding authorities for nearly 36 hours. He was identified in the predawn fatal shooting of a woman in Rienzi. The victim was found just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Highway 356 apartment. She had been shot. The identity of the victim has not been released.

McGaha reportedly drove away from the scene in a white Mercury Grand Marquis with large rims. Deputies located the car later Tuesday on County Road 418, south of Corinth.

At the time of the shooting, McGaha was on house arrest with the Mississippi Department of Corrections. That stems from a 2010 charge of possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. He was sentenced to serve five years in prison and five more years of post-release supervision, commonly called probation.

But McGaha didn't report as ordered and did not make the court-ordered payments. In April 2023, he was ordered to serve four years in the intensive supervision program, house arrest.
