Aldi to acquire Winn-Dixie, Harveys: Here's how many Alabama stores are changing hands

ALDI will be open New Year's Eve, but closed on New Year's Day.

One of nation's most popular bargain grocery stores is expanding operations in Alabama.

German-based Aldi is set to buy about 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores across the Southeast, including locations in Alabama, in a deal with parent company Southeastern Grocers, the retailer announced Wednesday.

Harveys Supermarket operates locations in Florida and Georgia.

"The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills,” Aldi CEO Jason Hart said in a news release.

The acquisition includes 400 grocery stores located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, the release said. The deal is expected to close in 2024.

"Aldi shares our vision to provide exceptional quality, service and value − and this unique opportunity will evolve our business to benefit our customers, associates and neighbors throughout the Southeast,” Southeastern Grocers President and CEO Anthony Hucker said.

The company said it will "evaluate" which Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores will convert to Aldi locations.

“For those stores we do not convert, our intention is that these continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores,” Hart said.
