Aldi ready to open sixth discount grocery store on the Treasure Coast

Aldi is ready to open its second discount grocery store in Fort Pierce and sixth on the Treasure Coast.

The global chain will open its new location at Jenkins and Okeechobee roads, just east of the new Chipotle next to the Wawa gas station, according to a news release.

It's opposite the corner occupied by Walgreens, Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks and the future 7 Brew drive-thru coffee stand — all part of the new development along the busy corridor near Interstate 95.

Will Aldi have grand opening giveaways?

  • Opening day: The first 100 customers will receive a gift bag filled with a sampling of Aldi products and a gift card as part of Aldi's "Golden Ticket" gift card giveaway program.

  • Grand opening weekend: Shoppers can enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $500 Aldi gift card.

What is Aldi?

Aldi is a global discount grocery store chain founded by Anna Albrecht, who opened her first food store in Essen, Germany, in 1913. Albrecht Discount's name was shortened to Aldi in 1962.

Aldi opened its first U.S. store in Iowa in 1976 and now has over 2,200 stores and headquarters in Batavia, Illinois.

What about the Aldi and Winn-Dixie merger?

Aldi acquired nearly 400 Winn-Dixie and Harvey's Supermarkets stores, according to an August news release. The company hasn't announced which of those stores will be converted into Aldi stores and which ones will continue to operate as is.

There are seven Winn-Dixie stores on the Treasure Coast: two in Fort Pierce and one each in Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, Stuart and Hobe Sound, according to its website.

There are no Harvey's Supermarkets stores on the Treasure Coast, according to its website.
