Alert: These toys and baby products were recalled in 2019, sometimes for deadly reasons

Most recalls occur because of what could happen.

Thank goodness.

Still, this list that include recalls in 2019 and some of the more important ones from last year includes one recall associated with infant deaths and another with a house fire causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Better safe and well-informed than sorry.

Target's Bullseye’s Playground wooden toy vehicles

When: April 18, 2019

Reason: There have been four reports of the wheels detaching and one of a missing wheel when opened. No injuries have been reported.

The recall involved 495,000 wooden toys sold between October and November 2018, either individually for $1 or as an eight-pack assortment online for $8. The toys should be taken away from children and returned to stores for a full refund. For more information, call Target at 800-440-0680 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT daily or consult the store's website.

Go Couture children’s loungewear sets

When: April 17, 2019

Reason: The sets fail the federal flammability standard for children's sleepwear, posing a risk of burns.

The sets were sold at Uname it, Pajama Mama, Blew Boutique and other children’s stores nationwide and online at gocouturekids.com from August 2016 through November 2018 for $38. Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play sleepers

When: April 12, 2019

Reason: The sleepers were recalled due to reports of more than 30 infant deaths. The babies "rolled over while unrestrained, or under other circumstances," according to a recall notice.

The sleepers were introduced in 2009 and all models, 4.7 million, are being recalled. Consumers should immediately stop using the product and seek a refund.

Mattel, Fisher-Price's parent company, announced instructions for a refund on its website.

  • Mattel asks that sleeper users send two parts, known as hubs, from the product to Fisher-Price to start the refund process.

  • Those who have purchased the sleeper new on or after Oct. 12, 2018 will receive a full cash refund if they include a receipt. If they don't have a receipt, "please write the month and year of purchase on one of the hubs you are returning, and we will determine the refund amount for you."

  • Those who have purchase the sleeper new before Oct. 12, 2018 will receive a voucher for a Fisher-Price product to be selected from a list of products determined by the original date of purchase of the product. That date will be determined by the sleeper receipt, of if you don't have the receipt, write the month and year on the hubs you are returning.

Rechargeable Power Banks

When: March 26, 2019

Reason: The power banks can reheat, causing a fire. One report said the power bank caused a house fire, resulting in $150,000 in property damage, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission report. No injuries were reported.

The power banks came in all kinds of colors and children-themed looks including a unicorn, a rainbow, a laughing with tears emoji, a penguin, a Narwhal, and a cat with sunglasses. About 170,500 were sold in the U.S. for about $25 at Burlington, Kohl’s, Ross and other stores. Consumers should stop using the device and contact Daniel M. Dollar General cough syrup

When: March 2019

Reason: DG/health Naturals baby Cough Syrup + Mucus discovered harmful bacteria after testing, according to the FDA notice of the voluntary recall by Kingston Pharma.

The baby cough syrup showed 1 in 10 bottles with low levels of Bacillus cereus and 2 in 10 bottles with low levels of Bacillus circulans. The first bacteria can cause vomiting and diarrhea. No sicknesses have been reported. The cough syrup recalled were the 2-fluid ounce bottles, marked with the lot number KL180157 with an expiration date of 11/20. Consumers are asked to return the bottles to Dollar General for a full refund. Nutrition Plates

When: March 12, 2019

Reason: The plates, which are supposed to be microwave safe, contain aluminum, making them a fire hazard. Two plates have caught fire in the microwave and one plate melted, according to the CPSC report. No injuries have been reported.

Almost 98,000 WIC nutrition plates with dividers illustrating the recommended food groups handed out for free in Indiana were recalled. They were distributed to families as part of a promotion from August 2018 through November 2018. Families are asked to stop using the plates and bring them back to the clinics for a free replacement. Cat & Jack Unicorn "Chiara" Boots

When: Feb. 12, 2019

Reason: The unicorn horn detaches, causing a choking hazard to children.

More than 33,000 Cat & Jack Unicorn "Chiara" Boots for toddlers were pulled from Target shelves and online after getting reports the unicorn horns detaching, the CSPC reported. No injuries were reported. The recall applies to shoes sizes 1 and 5-13. The shoes sold for about $27. Anyone who purchased the boots can return them to a Target store for a full refund or call 800-440-0680 for more information

Power Wheels Barbie Campers

When: Feb. 5, 2019

Reason: The camper can keep running even after the foot pedal has been released.

Maybe the camper was someone's holiday present but a camper that keeps on going, possibly into dangerous territory, had Fisher-Price recall 44,000 of the battery-operated vehicles. The CPSC said Fisher-Price received 17 complaints, but reported no injuries. Customers are asked to take the $400 camper sold at Walmart away from children and contact Fisher-Price for a free repair. Hot Mom portable bed rails

When: Jan. 30, 2019

Reason: The portable bed rails sold by Amazon seller Hot Mom fails to meet federal standards, posing suffocation and entrapment hazards to young children, according to the CPSC recall notice.

The bed rails were sold exclusively on Amazon and consumers are asked to contact Hot Mom for a refund. Hot Mom had been contacting all known purchasers directly. There were no reported injuries. Baby Rattle socks

When: Jan. 24, 2019

Reason: Small ornaments can come loose from the socks, creating a choking hazard to small children.

More than 22,000 holiday-themed, Midwest-CBK Baby Rattle Socks were recalled after being sold in boutiques from October 2017 through December 2018 for about $10. The cotton socks, for ages 0 to 12 months, have an animal or character depicted in the toe of the socks, such as a snowman, reindeer, whale, flamingo, tiger, or shark. Consumers are asked to stop wearing the socks and contact the company for a full refund at 800-394-4225 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or email productrecovery@mwcbk.com.

Infant Ibuprofen

When: January 2019

Reason: The medication may contain higher levels of ibuprofen than labeled.

Tris Pharma, Inc. initiated a nationwide voluntary recall of "Infants’ Ibuprofen Concentrated Oral Suspension" that were labeled to contain 50 mg. of ibuprofen per 1.25 mL. and sold under brands of Walmart, CVS Pharmacy and Family Dollar brands. There were no reports of adverse affects, but the company said there is a "remote possibility'' increased amount of ibuprofen could lead to permanent kidney injury in infants. Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea are other adverse affects.

Impacted lot numbers include:

  • 00717009A, 00717015A, 00717024A, 00717005A from Walmart sold under "Equate"

  • 4718, 00717024A, 00717006A, from CVS sold under "CVS Health"

  • 00717024A, from Family Dollar sold under "Family Wellness."

Target's Cat & Jack slap bracelets

When: Oct. 31, 2018

Reason: The metal wristband can pierce the fabric covering, exposing sharp edges, which pose a risk of cutting a child. Fantasia Accessories has received four reports of the bracelets piercing the fabric cover, resulting in five minor cuts to hands or wrists.

The Cat & Jack brand bracelets were sold for about $5 exclusively at Target in July 2018. About 22,500 bracelets are being recalled. Consumers should stop using the bracelets and can contact Fantasia Accessories to receive a replacement by calling 800-624-4826 or emailing info@fantasio.com.

Eddie Bauer Infant Carriers

When: Oct. 16, 2018

Reason: The buckles on the baby carriers can break and children strapped in could fall out.

Parents are being asked to stop using Gold Inc.'s Eddie Bauer First Adventure baby carrier, sold exclusively at Target stores. About 22,000 black carriers with "First Adventure" and "Eddie Bauer" in silver lettering Gold Inc. were recalled. At least eight broken buckles were reported. No injuries have been reported. The carriers were sold at Target between December 2017 and August 2018 for about $70 each.

Consumers who purchased this recalled product can either get a refund or a replacement. The Gold Inc. is asking consumers to cut off and return both straps and tag with their name, address and phone number to receive selected replacement products, free of charge, or a full refund.
