Alex City man convicted on firearm charge

ALABAMA (WRBL) — An Alex City man is facing up to ten years behind bars stemming from a shooting in 2020, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama.

Vincent Darrell Bias, 57, was convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

On Sept. 8, 2020, officers responded to a shooting at an Alex City residence. At the scene, they took a statement from the victim and other witnesses.

According to that statement, Bias and the victim had an argument the day before, then Bias returned the next day with a shotgun. Witnesses say Bias shot the victim, then left the scene.

The victim was left with non-life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement found Bias at his Alex City home. Investigators searched vehicles on Bias’ property and found a shotgun fitting the description of the gun used during the shooting.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Bias had multiple prior felony convictions, leaving him prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm or ammunition.

Bias is facing up to ten years in prison with no parole. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled in the next few months.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office noted if the judge determines the Armed Career Criminal Act of 1984 is relevant to Bias’ case, his sentence may range from 15 years to life in prison.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Alexander City Police Department investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorneys Eric M. Counts and Christopher P. Moore prosecuted the case.
