Alex Goodwin becomes Centerville’s first girls golfer to advance to IHSAA state tournament

RICHMOND, Ind. — Alex Goodwin picked a good day to have the round of her life. Last Saturday, the Centerville golfer shot an 80 at the Edgewood Golf Club regional to advance to the 50^th IHSAA girls’ golf state tournament.

The Bulldogs did not qualify for regionals as a team, but Goodwin and Aurora Biava played well enough during sectionals to make the regional field as individuals. Biava shot a 93 Saturday, but all eyes were on Goodwin before long.

The top three teams advance to state along with the top two individual finishers outside those teams. Goodwin’s 80 tied her for second among those players, meaning 18 holes wasn’t enough to decide who would move on to state. Goodwin won the first playoff hole, sending her through and making her the first Centerville girls golfer to ever qualify for state.

Goodwin will compete at state Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.

Richmond and Northeastern also competed in the regional after finishing first and second, respectively, at sectionals earlier in the week. This was the Knights’ first time ever qualifying for regionals as a team, and they finished eighth with a team score of 394.

The Red Devils’ regional appearance came after their fifth straight sectional championship, and they placed 10^th, just two strokes behind Northeastern.

Volleyball

Northeastern earns three wins in seven matches

The Knights’ full week started Monday with a 3-2 loss to Blue River Valley. Madi Austerman had 12 kills, and Lilly Null was right behind with 11 kills and 21 digs. Emma Neeley had five aces, four blocks and 32 assists. Bryelle Fisher and Olivia Null combined for seven aces and 37 digs. Kate Benjamin and Ella Coddington combined for another 23 digs.

Northeastern then lost 3-0 to Franklin County Tuesday. Fisher led the defense with 13 digs, and Lilly Null had 10. Neeley had three aces, and Coddington had 15 assists.

Next came a 3-1 win over Centerville Thursday. Lilly Null led both the offense and defense with 13 kills, four aces and 15 digs. Fisher had 11 kills, six aces and 12 digs. Neeley added another 12 kills, and Olivia Null added another six aces. Coddington had 34 assists.

Northeastern turned around and played Centerville again Saturday in its first of four matches in the Eastern Hancock Invite. The Knights beat the Bulldogs 2-0 with Coddington’s 14 assists leading the way.

Then came a 2-1 loss to Daleville. Neeley had three aces, Olivia Null had 12 digs and Coddington had 19 assists. The Knights then lost to Frankton 2-0 with Coddington’s 13 assists as a bright spot. Finally, Northeastern bested Indian Creek 2-0. Coddington led the way again with three aces and 16 assists.

Hagerstown, Seton, Lincoln grab two wins

The Tigers won both their matches last week with the first coming Tuesday 3-0 over Union City. Kylee Vinson, Bailey Jeffries and Kasiti Ferriell each had at least three aces and combined for 11. Ferriell and Rylan Young joined for 29 digs. Ella Logston had 15 assists.

Hagerstown then beat Shenandoah 3-0 Thursday. Young had four aces and 26 digs, and Jeffries added 14 digs.

The Cardinals had aces wild last week, starting in a 3-1 win over Winchester Monday. They had 28 aces as a team with Hannah Johnston, Ella Berger and Bella Cornell’s seven apiece leading the way. Bryn VanVleet and Allison Hamilton each had three. Johnston added 13 kills, 10 digs and 11 assists. VanVleet had 11 kills, 10 digs and six blocks. Kara Berger added 16 digs, and Cornell added 14 assists.

Seton’s ace party continued Saturday at the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference Championships. With 15 aces as a team in a 2-0 win over Bethesda Christian, VanVleet and Ella and Kara Berger each had at least three. Kara also had 10 digs. The Cardinals then had nine aces, led by VanVleet with five, in a 2-0 loss to Park Tudor.

The Golden Eagles beat Rushville 3-0 Monday. Grace Sherwood had 11 kills, and Reagan Sturgis had three aces. Paige Lunsford had 18 digs, and Mallory Burns added another 12. Kaila Arthur had 10 digs and 24 assists.

Lincoln then lost 3-2 to Connersville Tuesday. Burns led both sides with 15 kills and 31 digs. Mia Cupp had 10 kills, 18 digs and three aces. Sherwood had 10 kills and 13 digs. Kelsey Stevens served up three aces, and Sturgis had 10 digs. Arthur had 14 digs and 35 assists.

Lincoln’s final match ended in a 3-0 win over Knightstown Thursday. Sherwood’s 10 kills and 10 digs led the way. Arthur had 11 digs and 22 assists. Burns had 10 digs and three aces.

Richmond wins on senior night; Centerville drops four

The Red Devils fell to Connersville 3-0 Monday but redeemed themselves with a 3-0 win over Anderson on Thursday’s senior night.

The Bulldogs had a tough week, going 0-4. The first loss came Tuesday 3-1 to Winchester. Ava McCurdy and Chloe Goodman each had 10 kills.

Centerville then fell 3-1 to Northeastern Thursday and 2-0 to Northeastern again and Daleville in Saturday’s Eastern Hancock Invite.

Richmond, Centerville both take lopsided losses

The Red Devils fell 5-0 to Lafayette Jefferson Saturday, and the Bulldogs lost 4-0 to Connersville Monday.

Cross country

All six county schools run at Connersville

Centerville, Richmond, Northeastern, Hagerstown, Seton and Lincoln all competed at the Connersville Invite Tuesday. The Bulldogs won the meet with 67 points, and the Red Devils came in third with 99. The Knights finished sixth (158), and the Tigers were seventh (180). Here are the Wayne County runners who finished in the top half of the field:

Centerville wins at Delta

The Bulldogs won the Delta Invite Saturday with 39 points, and Chloe Scales broke Centerville’s all-time record with a time of 19:42.7. Ten Bulldogs placed in the top 25:

Richmond, Hagerstown, Seton run in separate Saturday meets

The Red Devils competed at the Golden Bear Invite and placed 15^th with a team score of 405. Lizzy Graham finished 12^th with a time of 20:11.5. Keena Barker finished 25^th with a time of 20:44.5.

The Tigers participated in the Tour de Sewer and finished 10^th with 243 points. Ava Moore finished 39^th with a time of 23:06.3. Logan Klein finished 44^th with a time of 23:30.2.

The Cardinals hosted the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference Championships at IU East. Seton’s lone runner, Gwynie Falcone, finished second with a time of 21:12.0.

Golf

All five schools compete at sectionals

Prior to regionals, Richmond, Northeastern, Centerville, Hagerstown and Lincoln all played in sectionals at Liberty Country Club.

The Red Devils won their fifth consecutive sectional title with a team score of 379. Zoe Brock shot an 83 to finish third overall. Isabella Roll (87), Lauren Freeman (96), Priya Hodges (111) and Mariana Rivas (138) also contributed.

The Knights finished second with a 388, marking the first time Northeastern had ever qualified for regionals as a team. Competing for the Knights were Baylee Wissler, Zoe Cline, Lauren Lacey, Julia Beatty and Ava Bales.

The Bulldogs finished fourth after tying with Union County at 391 and losing out on a regional team spot by a playoff hole. Alex Goodwin tied for first individually with an 83, and Aurora Biava shot a 96, both good enough to advance to regionals. Following the two were Kenna Hemmerling (99) and Emma Staton (113).

The Tigers were seventh with a 472. The Golden Eagles were eighth with a 508.
