His Cancer Battle
Beloved Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He's been through multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and he's explained how he is making peace with his tough diagnosis.
"I’m not afraid of dying. I’ve lived a good life, a full life, and I’m nearing the end of that life… if it happens, why should I be afraid of that?"
"When I feel that my skills have diminished to the point that I notice and am bothered by it — I notice now, but I am not as bothered by it because all the people around me are saying, ‘No, it’s OK.' But there will come a point where they will no longer be able to say, ‘It’s OK.'"
His Wife's Support
Many past contestants have been donating their time and money to cancer research in Trebek's honor, so there have been many public outpourings of support.
However, his biggest source of support has been his wife of over 30 years, Jean. She recently gave an interview with SurvivorNet where she explained how she has been using her faith as a way to support Trebek and herself.
Relying On Her Faith
Trebek, who practices Religious Science, opened up about how she leans on her faith to stay positive.
"Just ask the universe, ‘What’s the next step for me? The universe will always respond. I am absolutely sure that we live in a benevolent universe that is always conspiring for our highest and greatest good."
A Little About Her Faith
Religious Science uses "sound healing, meditation, and Reiki" as part of the practice, and Trebek explained that she also used crystal bowls and her own voice in a major way.
"It’s like how when a mother sings a lullaby to her baby. It’s the intention in her voice that is calming the baby. She’s singing the words of life and beauty to this little baby, and the baby feels that in the vibration of her voice."
