Series regular Alexa Davalos is surrendering her badge and unexpectedly stepping away from the CBS procedural drama “FBI: Most Wanted,” ahead of its fifth season.

There was no indication in the final episode of the fourth season that Davalos’ character, Special Agent Kristin Gaines, might be departing the show, and the news allegedly came as a surprise to Davalos herself, reports Deadline.

A source close to the situation said that producers informed the actress of their decision while she was still on set, just after the filming of her final scene.

The split was described as amicable, although the exact reason for her departure is still unclear.

Similar to other Wolf Entertainment procedurals, “FBI: Most Wanted” has seen a fair amount of cast turnover throughout the years, usually spurred on by a combination of creative and financial decisions.

Davalos was introduced in Season 3, as a former Naval Intelligence officer and member of the FBI’s Fugitive Task Force.

At the time, the cast was led by Julian McMahon (playing Jess LaCroix), who exited that season and was replaced by Dylan McDermott as squad leader Remy Scott.

In the last episode of Season 4, her character was part of the central team that aided Scott (McDermott) in the capturing of his brother’s murderer, who was trying to escape to Canada.

It remains to be seen how the show’s writers will explain her exit in the upcoming season, but the ongoing WGA strike has created an even larger window for the creative team to decide, or reconsider bringing her back.

Prior to landing her role on the show, Davalos starred as Juliana Crain in all four seasons of Prime Video’s “The Man in the High Castle.”
