Alexandria Coronavirus Update: Vaccine Wait List, Zip Code Data

ALEXANDRIA, VA — With COVID-19 vaccinations underway in Alexandria, the health department faces high demand from people waiting for appointments.

Virginia's phase 1b of vaccinations was recently expanded to include all people 65 and over as well as 16 to 64 with underlying medical conditions. The phase had already included all people 75 and older and certain essential workers, and people living in homeless shelters, correctional facilities and migrant labor camps.

Residents eligible in phases 1a and 1b have been submitting pre-registrations for vaccination appointments. As of Thursday evening, the health department reported nearly 20,000 pre-registrations from people eligible in phase 1b based on age or medical condition and thousands more from essential workers.

Due to limited supply, there may be a wait before appointments become available for some eligible residents. The city estimates it will receive less than 2,000 doses per week for the next three to four weeks. According to Virginia Department of Health data, 6,195 doses have been administered to residents in Alexandria, and 378 are fully vaccinated.

Mayor Justin Wilson echoed a letter from Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay to the governor saying his health district is ready to administer more doses when the state provides more vaccine doses.

"NoVa jurisdictions have been planning for administration of vaccinations for months," Wilson tweeted in response to the letter. "We have the staffing, volunteers, processes and community partnerships in place to vaccinate our population."

The health department is prioritizing appointments for people aged 75 and up, followed by 65 and older, then people with underlying health conditions. There are also appointment slots set aside for essential workers prioritized in phase 1b, including first responders, corrections and shelter workers, childcare employees and K-12 employees.

Anyone who has pre-registered does not need to submit the form again. The health department will notify individuals when appointment slots become available but does not have an estimate on exact timing.
