An Alexandria man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the slaying of an elderly man in an Alexandria movie theater parking lot.

Antonio Bennett Brooks, 21, had been indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the July 19, 2021, death of 74-year-old Larry Baxley. The charge was reduced to manslaughter last month, and Brooks changed his plea to guilty to that charge and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Ninth Judicial District Court Judge Mary Lauve Doggett sentenced Brooks to 40 years on the manslaughter charge and 10 years each on the attempted murder charges. The sentences are to be served concurrently and without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

Two other juveniles were given citations, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office stated at the time of the shooting.

Doggett sentenced the teen to 12 years and six months after he changed his plea to guilty Monday morning. His trial was to have been held this week.

He was accused of holding women captive and beating or raping some of them, according to officials at the time.
