Ocasio-Cortez: GOP Doesn’t Care About Brown, Black Or Poor Babies
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Friday attacked the GOP when she claimed it “doesn’t care about babies at all — especially brown, black or poor ones.”
The lawmaker doubled down on her criticism of Alabama’s strict new abortion law in a series of tweets in which she accused “the GOP extremists trying to invoke ‘the unborn’ to jail people for abortion” of hypocrisy for not supporting her signature policy proposal, the Green New Deal.
The Green New Deal aims to make the U.S. carbon-neutral by 2030. Some critics in conservative quarters, however, have falsely attempted to paint it as a ruse to prevent people from driving cars or flying by airplane.
“Where are you on climate change?” Ocasio-Cortez asked on Twitter. “OH right, you want to burn fossil fuels til there’s hell on Earth.”
“If they were truthful about their motives, they’d be consistent in their principles,” she added. “They’re not.”
To the GOP extremists trying to invoke “the unborn” to jail people for abortion:
Where are you on climate change? OH right, you want to burn fossil fuels til there’s hell on Earth.
If they were truthful about their motives, they’d be consistent in their principles. They’re not.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 17, 2019
If the GOP really did care about babies, it would co-sponsor the Green New Deal or “at LEAST” have a plan to tackle the climate crisis, would guarantee health care for all and “not stand for the death+caging of babies on our border,” Ocasio-Cortez claimed.
The GOP doesn’t care about babies at all - especially brown, black, or poor ones. If they did, they’d:
- cosponsor the Green New Deal or at LEAST have a real climate plan
- guarantee healthcare so ALL can get prenatal care
- not stand for the death+caging of babies on our border— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 17, 2019
She took aim at President Donald Trump with her third and final post in the thread, in which she described him as “a mad king.”
What angers me about the GOP’s attempts to turn the United States into a far-right Christian theocracy is how dishonest they are about it.
At least be forthright about your desire to subvert and dismantle our democracy into a creepy theological order led by a mad king.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 17, 2019
Alabama’s Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signed the state’s new abortion bill into law on Wednesday. It effectively bans the procedure, including in cases of rape and incest, and has sparked widespread anger around the world. That law is the most severe in a wave of bills in several states that aim to outlaw most abortions.
Ocasio-Cortez claimed earlier this week that the ban was really about “controlling women’s sexuality” and “owning women.”

Abortion bans aren’t just about controlling women’s bodies.
They’re about controlling women’s sexuality. Owning women.
From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, US religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 16, 2019
Ultimately, this is about women’s power.
When women are in control of their sexuality, it threatens a core element underpinning right-wing ideology: patriarchy.
It’s a brutal form of oppression to seize control of the 1 essential thing a person should command: their own body.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) May 16, 2019
