Alexandria police investigating sexual assault

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — Police are investigating a sexual assault Wednesday that took place overnight in Alexandria.

The Alexandria Police Department (APD) said that a woman was walking near Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Ave. after midnight when a stranger attacked and assaulted her.

The woman was being treated at a hospital as of Wednesday morning.

The police department said that detectives will continue investigating throughout Wednesday by canvassing the area and talking with community members.

“There’s kids around here, families, you know, it’s pretty relatively decent around here. So I’m shocked. I’m surprised,” said Connie Snyder.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Detective Kristina Loerch at 703-746-6785.

APD said that this case was “unrelated” to an incident that happened on Main Line Boulevard on Feb. 4.

“We are asking our community to be vigilant and to just take their safety and the safety of others very seriously and just to be cautious and be aware as you go about daily life,” said Tracy Walker, Alexandria Police Department communications manager.

Walker said stranger sexual assaults are not common and that’s why the search for the attacker is a top priority, with increased patrols in the area and more resources for the investigation.

“We are stronger and safer together. So we would ask that folks just look out for each other and please check your security camera footage should you have that,” Walker said.
