Alexandria police investigating after child ‘dropped off’ at apartments

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — The Alexandria Police Department (APD) was investigating after someone “dropped off” a child near an apartment complex on Wednesday evening.

In a post on the platform X on Wednesday evening, APD said that an “unknown person” left the girl at 8 S. Van Dorn St. around 9:45 p.m. At that time, officers were looking for the child’s parents.

Officers said the girl seemed to be between one and two years old and was “in apparent good health.” She was dressed in warm clothing when she was found.

Fatima Rahali told DC News Now that she saw a white midsize SUV leave the girl in the parking lot and drive off.

“I saw the car stopping there, but I don’t see… what he was doing or anything. He was quick. I thought he was dropping maybe water or something,” Rahali said.

Rahali said that she sat with the girl for several hours.

APD said early in its efforts that it had “possible video” of the vehicle used to drop off the child. By early Thursday afternoon, police posted that they had found the girl’s family and that it was helping officers in their investigation. The posted noted that the girl was “safe & doing well in the custody of Alexandria DCHS Child Welfare Services.”
