It’s official — the Heartstopper universe is expanding once more.

On Wednesday, April 5, author and illustrator Alice Oseman announced on Instagram that there will be a Volume 6 (!!) of the Heartstopper graphic novel series. The now six-book collection (and Netflix adaptation) follows Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, two classmates at Truham Grammar School in the UK who meet, form an unlikely friendship, and eventually, fall in love.

Alice has previously said that Volume 5 would mark the end of Charlie and Nick’s story, but now, Volume 6 will be the final chapter.

“I began working on Volume 5 about two years ago and by 2022 I was really, really struggling with it,” Alice said. “Wasn't feeling confident about where the story was going or the pages I was drawing and I was really struggling to balance working on it with the Yearbook and with making the TV show, writing season 2. And it was just turning into something that I wasn't really happy with.”

After taking a step back, the author realized that they were “trying to fit too much into Volume 5” and needed to further explore Charlie and Nick’s journey in a separate novel.

“It was the right thing to do,” Alice explained. “I can take my time with the end of the story, make sure all of the characters get their final moment to shine, and properly explore how Nick and Charlie’s relationship progresses in their final years of school.”

Alice didn’t reveal a release date for Volume 6 — but they did confirm that Volume 5 arrives in the UK on November 9, 2023, and in the United States on December 23, 2023.

“Volume 5 will see the Heartstopper gang looking towards the future,” Alice shared. “Summer is on its way. Charlie has been working really hard on his mental health, and he’s starting to find an inner confidence: who he is, what he wants, and what he wants to do with this life, while Nick is having a little bit of a crisis about where he’s going to university because he’ll have to make his university application choices very soon. Is he gonna go somewhere far away, or stay close to where Charlie is? We’ll see.”

If you can hardly wait until December, catch up on the first four volumes of Heartstopper (plus the Yearbook!) — and don’t forget to read up on every detail we know so far about season 2 of Heartstopper on Netflix.
