Alleged carjacker dies in crash in Loop identified

An 18-year-old man who died in an alleged carjacking Wednesday afternoon in the Loop neighborhood has been identified, officials said.

Shortly before 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, a female victim, whose exact age was not given by police, was in the first block of East Lake Street in an Infiniti FX35 when a male and a female entered her vehicle. A struggle ensued between the victim and the alleged carjackers while the vehicle moved forward, and the vehicle struck a column. The impact of the crash trapped the individuals inside, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department arrived on the scene and extracted everyone from the vehicle. The male suspect was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as Elijah Treadwell, 18, of the Uptown neighborhood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The victim also was taken to Northwestern but her condition was not available.
