Alleged robbery in Paterson leads to fatal shooting and arrest, officials say

A Newark man was arrested in connection to the death of a Hillside man at a Newark hospital early Friday morning, officials said.

Tahji Rosebrough, 22, was arrested and faces murder charges in relation to the death of Kyle D. Newton, 28, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora said in a release.

Valdes said that at shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, Paterson police officers reported to the scene of a stolen vehicle at Belmont Avenue and North 10th Street. Once there, they were told that shots had been fired nearby. They did not find the car or a shooting victim.

Officers said Newton had driven the car to University Hospital in Newark with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead a short time later, Valdes said.

Police allege that Rosebrough and Newton both were involved in a robbery in Paterson and Rosebrough shot Newton, leading to the injuries that resulted in Newton's death.

Rosebrough was arrested without incident Friday by the Rutgers Police Department at University Hospital in Newark and he was transferred to the custody of the Paterson Police Department.
