Allegheny County Health Department to treat 10,000 stormwater basins to prevent mosquito breeding

The Allegheny County Health Department will be treating stormwater catch basins in Pittsburgh with pesticides to deter mosquito breeding on Monday.

“Catch basins are popular breeding sites for mosquitoes in urban environments,” explained ACHD Housing and Community Environment Program Manager Tim Murphy. “Mosquitoes that breed in catch basins have the potential for spreading diseases, such as West Nile virus, to residents.”

The treatments will take place from June 5 through June 9 between 4:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Officials said the treatments may be postponed if heavy rain is in the forecast.

Approximately 10,000 catch basins in Pittsburgh will be treated.

The pesticide, FourStar, is non-toxic to people, pets, and aquatic life.
