Jun. 10—LIMA — The Allen County Board of Commissioners along with Allen County Job and Family Services gave a proclamation to dedicate Tuesday, June 15, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The day is meant to raise awareness in the community of seniors who are at risk of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
"The senior citizens of Allen County are respected and valued members of our communities and all residents have the collective responsibility to contribute to the safety and dignity of our elders," said Commissioner Brian Winegardner. "Combating abuse, neglect, and exploitation of our elders improves the quality of life for all seniors in Allen County and across this country, as well as allows seniors to live as independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of Allen County."
The commissioners stated that recognizing the day in Ohio is more important than ever, as the senior population continues to increase across the state.
In Allen County, there are resources available to assist seniors who are at risk of abuse through the Adult Protective Services program.
Allen County residents are encouraged to wear purple on Tuesday to raise awareness about World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
