Allen outlet mall gunman was shot 3 times, head wound ‘immediately fatal,’ autopsy says

The gunman who killed eight people and injured seven others in a mass shooting at the Allen Premium Outlets was fatally shot three times by an officer, the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed in an autopsy report released Tuesday.

The gunman, 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia of Dallas, was shot once in the head through the mouth, once in his arm, and once in his ear, according to the autopsy report.

He was shot by an officer who was at the mall in response to an unrelated call. The officer — who was cleared of wrongdoing by a Collin County grand jury — has not yet been publicly identified. But the officer’s body-camera footage was released in late June, which showed him tracking sounds of gunfire to reach Garcia.

He was shot by the officer less than four minutes after the attack on shoppers began.

The gunshot wound to the head was immediately fatal due to “perforation of the brain” and it was confirmed that it was not self-inflicted, the medical examiner said in the report.

Garcia had an additional injury, an abrasion on the right side of his face.

A toxicology report for the gunman came back negative for alcohol and illicit drugs, but was positive for caffeine.

The medical examiner also confirmed that Garcia had tattoos, including a skull on his right arm, a “panther-like” animal on the right side of his chest, a swastika on the upper left side of his chest, and a tattoo that said “Dallas Fort Worth.”

Garcia posted pictures of his tattoos on a Russian social media site, where he also posted his views and ideology on white supremacy and beliefs shared by other mass shooters.

The gunman opened fire at the Allen Premium Outlets mall on May 6, killing eight people. The victims were Daniela Mendoza, 11; Sofia Mendoza, 8; Kyu Song Cho, 37; Cindy Cho, 35; James Cho, 3; Christian LaCour, 20; Aishwarya Thatikonda, 26; and Elio Cumana Rivas, 32.

The outlet mall reopened May 31, just 25 days after the shooting.
