Allen outlet mall reopens a month after Texas mass shooting: ‘I am not ready’

The Allen Premium Outlets mall in North Texas reopened Wednesday, nearly a month after a mass shooting there left eight people dead.

A few customers and an increased police presence populated the Dallas-area outdoor shopping center shortly after it returned to business at 10 a.m. local time, according to the Dallas Morning News. An H&M store said it will remain closed until June 12, but many of the other 120 retailers seemed to be open.

The stores had been closed since May 6, when a gunman, identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, opened fire before he was fatally shot by a police officer who happened to be in the area.

Among those who returned to the mall Wednesday was shopper Delmy Argueda, who told local news station KTVT she lives nearby and “really missed” going to the stores. She said she felt “a little bit nervous” about being back.

“I’m scared, but I pray to God nothing happens,” Argueda said.

An employee who works at a store in the shopping center returned Monday to fold clothes ahead of the reopening.

“I still shake,” Niqi Crump told the news station KXAS. “I still feel that shake that was hanging with me in that office that afternoon.”

Crump is scheduled to be back Saturday, which will be her first day at work since the customers returned.

“I am not ready,” Crump said. “Thankfully I’m not scheduled for that day [Wednesday] so I can hear feedback from my coworkers before I get there this weekend.”

The suburban Allen is about 25 miles north of downtown Dallas.

“As we reopen, we do so with heavy hearts in remembrance of those who were lost and with care for those who were affected by the tragedy on May 6, 2023,” a spokesman for the outlet said. “We will continue to pray for the victims, their families and all who loved them.”
