Alliance-area events to mark Memorial Day

Alliance

The parade will start at 10 a.m. May 30 on East Main Street and will follow its regular route from Union Avenue to Diehl Court and end at Alliance City Cemetery. Groups can register until May 29 to walk in the parade.

A tribute to Gold Star families will be at 2 p.m. May 28 at Silver Park. Members of Gold Star families who have purchased banners through the city's Honoring Hometown Heroes project will be recognized. The event will feature music, testimonials from families, and the unveiling of a new memorial stone next to the 9/11 memorial in Silver Park and remarks from Mayor Alan Andreani and the state commander of the American Legion. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served in Miller Pavilion.

Beloit

George D. Worth Post 574 of the American Legion plans a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Flags will be carried to the Veterans Memorial at 9:45 a.m. The Legion will place flags on veterans' graves at 9 a.m. Saturday. Members of the public are invited to help with the effort.

East Canton

Lowell D. Oberly American Legion Post 667 will host a parade that will begin at 10 a.m. May 30. Lineup forms at the corner of Browning and Noble streets by 9:30 a.m. If you or your group would like to participate, contact the post commander.

Hartville

The ceremony will be at 10 a.m. May 28 at Hartville Memorial Park. The procession from Village Hall to the park will be around 9:45 a.m.

Marlboro Township

Parade will be at 1 p.m. Lineup will start at noon on St. Peters Church Road. A memorial service will follow at Marlboro Cemetery immediately after the parade.  Guest speaker is Debbie White, with special music by Jeff Baker. The Gettysburg Address will be presented by Marlboro Elementary School fifth grade student council.

Minerva

Services will be May 30 at Moultrie Chapel, 23577 state Route 172, according to the West Township Memorial Association. The chapel is two miles east of New Franklin, north of Minerva. It is two miles east of the intersection of state Routes 183 and 172.

The march to decorate the graves will begin at 2 p.m., led by the Don V. Cross American Legion Post 357 from Minerva. The Minerva Community Band will perform patriotic music and taps. United Elementary School fifth grader Myla French will recite the Gettysburg Address.

The program inside the chapel will include speaker Frank Kemp Sr. from Canton. Kemp was the Stark County Veteran of the Year in 2019, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from May 1966 to December 1968. He served in Vietnam from November 1967 to December 1968, and served in the Army National Guard in 1971-72 and again with his son from 1987-94. Kemp is a member of Stark County Veterans Service Commission and is in his second five-year term representing Vietnam Veterans of America.

Veterans in attendance will be recognized. Barb Burchett will provide special music, and Joseph Ellis will lead the congregation in group singing. Ice cream will be served after the program.

Washington Township

Washington Township Historical Society Memorial Day service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the memorial site by the township hall, 5789 Beechwood Ave., Washington Township. Guest speaker will be World War II veteran Ron VanDress, who will recount his experience in the Battle of Okinawa. There will be a flag burning ceremony on June 14. Citizens can bring their worn and old flags to the Township Administration building before that date.
