Alliance-area students win DAR essay contest
Students from Alliance Friends Christian Academy were the grand prize winners in the recent Jane Bain Chapter National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest.
Frankie Greiner was named Patriots Choice winner for grades five to eight; and Serenity Carnes was Patriots Choice winner for the division for those in ninth through 12 grades.
Twenty-five essays from students in grades five to 12 were submitted. The contest included students from Alliance Friends and those from Lexington and Washington elementaries in Marlington Local School District.
Younger students’ essay topic involved writing an essay as if they were delegates to the 2nd Continental Congress during 1775-1776. The students selected the colony they were from and what was important to accomplish for it. High school students chose a patriot from the American Revolution and discussed their contributions.
Chapter members chose a Patriots Choice winner in each grade category after interviewing the essay writers during the event and evaluating students on their knowledge of the subject and enthusiasm.
First prize winners read their essays during the event. Anna Taylor chose Benedict Arnold as her patriot, and Rylynn Teis wrote her essay as a delegate from Virginia.
