Alliance Garden Club got a lesson in propagation during a recent visit to Maplestone Ornamentals, a mail-order nursery specializing in Japanese maples.

Group members toured the Washington Township facility, and learned about root cuttings and various types of grafting.

Maplestone Ornamentals is a growing nursery that also specializes in shrubs including conifers, bonsai starters, and hard to find deciduous flowering trees. Co-owner Abby Norcom gave demonstrations while speaking with the group.

Maplestone Ornamentals was established in 2006 by Micah and Abby Norcom. The majority of Maplestone’s trees are sold via mail order, but those interested can visit the nursery to pick their own trees by appointment requested at maplestoneornamentals.com. Visits can occur Wednesday through Saturday from April through July.

After the tour, held a meeting at Firehouse Bar and Grill at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, where they discussed the upcoming plant sale that will run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 13 at Beechwood Playground, 2270 Beechwood Ave. in Washington Township.

Members divide the perennials from their own gardens and also have some annuals and hanging baskets for those looking to surprise mom on Mother’s Day. Proceeds from the sale support beautification and environmental issues.

The group next will meet May 10 at Secrest Arboretum. Carpool will leave promptly at 9:50 a.m. Those interested in joining should contact club President Cheri Myers at 330-935-2996.
