A man Alliance Police describe as homeless was arrested Sunday afternoon on charges of aggravated burglary while possessing a deadly weapon.

Officers arrested 44-year-old Shannon C. Fortner near a home in the 400 block of Glamorgan Avenue. They responded to a call of a burglary in progress.

Police say Fortner faces a single first-degree felony after they spotted him walking away from the home while someone outside the home pointed the suspect out and yelled, “He has my jewelry!”

Police say Fortner was spotted near the end of the home’s driveway while wearing “a bunch of jewelry around his neck and his wrists. He had a machete in a sheath hanging from his belt and was also carrying an axe.”

The police report says the victim responded to Alliance Police Department and “identified several pieces of jewelry, clothing, and other misc. items as ones that were taken from her residence. The stolen items were estimated as being worth approximately $800.”

The police report also said Fortner was transported to the Stark County Jail, where he remains, due to “his aggressiveness towards officers.”

Fortner is due to appear at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Alliance Municipal Court.
