The virtual program is sponsored by the National Civic League. The All-America City Award "recognizes communities that leverage civic engagement, collaboration, inclusiveness and innovation to successfully address local issues," according to the NCL.

This year marks the 73rd year for the program.

Each year, those who apply for recognition must show how well they qualify based on a theme. The 2022 theme is "Housing as a Platform to Promote Early School Success and Equitable Learning Recovery.” The 2022 event is being held in conjunction with Grade-Level Reading Week.

Judges select 10 winners each year. Finalists and winners see many benefits from their participation, the NCL says on its website. Finalists find it easier to attract and retain businesses to their communities, and see an increase in tourism and grants. Those involved in the effort say they learn much more about their communities during the application process.

Alliance is scheduled to present its case about 12:15 p.m. July 21. In the city's group that session are Roanoke, Virginia (11 a.m.); Springfield, Massachusetts (11:25 a.m.); and Suncoast Region, Florida (11:50 a.m.).

Other finalists competing in the 2022 contest are Des Moines, Iowa; Palacios, Texas; Metro Omaha, Nebraska; Los Angeles; Barberton, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Tarpon Springs, Florida; Chicago; Kansas City; New Haven, Connecticut; Phoenix; El Paso, Texas; Sacramento, California; San Antonio, Texass; Atlanta; and Portland, Maine.

Winners will be announced during a virtual program that runs 7:30 to 9 p.m. July 21.

The four-day event includes seminars and workshops dealing with cities and their work to boost readiness and participation in the program. Find details at nationalcivicleague.org/2022-all-america-city-awards/agenda.
