Alliance Salvation Army still needs many toys for Christmas

ALLIANCE ‑ Alliance Salvation Army still needs toys for this year's Christmas distribution.

Major Tara Harrison said the ministry is helping at least 350 area families with gifts, food and/or clothes this holiday. That number continues to grow, she said, as more families call and ask for assistance.

"The economy is bad," she said. "The price of everything is going up and people are unable to afford the prices, so they are coming to the Salvation Army for assistance. As long as people are calling, we will be providing. It's who we are."

Meanwhile, the chapter's Angel Tree program still has about 150 tags available to take and donate gifts. The trees are located at Staples, Giant Eagle and Consumer National Bank in the Carnation City. However, the tree program will soon end, Harrison said.

"At this point," she said, it might be a better option for someone to purchase toys and bring them, unwrapped, to the Salvation Army at 57 W. Main St.

The distribution starts Thursday and ends Dec. 22. The boxes for families will include gifts, food, a meat voucher for Save-A-Lot and, potentially, clothes. Harrison said there is no guarantee those helped with receive clothing. She said they'll accept toy donations at the citadel until Dec. 22.

Harrison also said the agency is helping seniors in the low-income Alliance Towers apartments with food and a ham steak for Christmas.
