Alliance woman wins Carnation Festival photo contest
Pam Hoff of Alliance took first place overall in the 2023 Greater Alliance Carnation Festival Amateur Photography Contest with her photo of a bird in a crabtree.
Hoff won $100 for her victory in the contest that was managed by event co-chairs Fred and Joan Cockrill, or Cockrill’s Studio in Alliance.
The contest attracted 39 entries, all in the “traditional” category for those ages 18 and older. Judging was done Aug. 3 and announced Saturday.
Judges were Dennis Valentine, professional photographer/owner Valentine Photography in Louisville; Kelby Smith, assistant director of brand marketing at University of Mount Union and a former Carnation Festival queen; and Joel Collins, retired professor of art at University of Mount Union.
Second prize in the contest went to Jen Slack of Louisville for her photo, “Boy of Summer.” Third prize went to Heath Smith of Akron for the photo “Little Bird, Little Bird.”
Honorable mention notices were made for Smith for a photo called “Finding Your Voice”; Hoff for a photo called “A Mother’s Love”; Rich Fraser of Canton for a photo called “Two Guns”; and Mark Tucker of Alliance for a photo called “Brilliant Crimson.”
Photos will be displayed in the front window of the Lingenfelter Centre, at 670 W. State St. in Alliance, through the run of the festival, which ends Aug. 13.
