Allow These ‘Mindhunter’ Theories to Hold You Over Until Season 3

The problem with Netflix shows is that we watch them way too GD fast. We all waited two years for another round of Mindhunter, and now we have to wait who knows how long for part 3. Still, if it’s going to be another two years, we’re going to have to find some way to make it through the hellatus.

Maybe the following theories will be able to hold us over:

Brian is a serial killer in the making.

After the events of season 2, so many people (possibly including his own dad) believe lil Brian Tench fits the bill of a budding serial killer. After being party to a literal murder of an infant (yes, really), Brian begins to exhibit what Holden might call classic serial killer traits. He wets the bed and stops talking, and that scene where he stares at a little girl on the swing is just plain creepy. Not to mention, it was his idea to put the dead child on the cross, which his mom explains away as him trying to revive the child, but...eek.

Listen, fans were pretty torn over this story line. Some—myself included—felt like stigmatizing adopted children, especially those on the spectrum, is a touch irresponsible and insensitive. That aside, it also feels extremely unrealistic that Bill’s own son would become the exact thing he’s studying. Still, many fans are just plain fascinated. But here’s the thing: Brian’s sub-plot is based on a real-life murder—and it may prove Brian will NOT become a serial killer.

In 1971, the Crucifixion Murder was committed by a pair of brothers—7 and 10 years old—who brutally killed a 20-month-old infant. Like in Mindhunter, Billy and Bobby (not their real names, which have been vigorously protected from the press) took baby Noah Alba to an unfinished basement and killed him when he began to cry. They later put him on the cross as an attempt to bring him back to life—just like Brian did.

Contrary to how fans feel about Brian, neither of the real-life murderers became serial killers. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean the show couldn’t take Brian in another direction.

Could Holden be a killer tho?

This theory is really something. People have been talking about the possibility of Holden breaking bad since season 1. I get it: He’s narcissistic and manipulative, and he can come off emotionally detached, but I think his reaction to the Atlanta Child Murders and his relationships with the mothers kind of proves this theory wrong. Still, here’s what the cast had to say about it:

I have to agree with Holt McCallany, who plays Bill. I think Holden’s way more likely to be killed by a frustrated coworker than become a predator himself.

Get ready to meet the Killer Clown.

Thanks to eagle-eyed Reddit user @Nick_O_Lay, we know that John Wayne Gacy, aka the Killer Clown, is at least on the BSU’s list of killers to talk to.

It’s quite likely he’ll be one of the highly anticipated interviews of season 3, but who else could make an appearance?

Ted Bundy: The notorious murderer was caught in 1976 and executed in 1989. He was open to talking to the FBI and even consulted on the Green River Killer case. Zac Efron, you down?

Jeffrey Dahmer: This guy killed and dismembered 17 people between 1978 and 1991. Unless we jump way forward in time again, he’d have to be a serial killer they hunt rather than interview. Would love to see it.

Robert Hansen: Known as the Butcher Baker, Hansen abducted, raped, and murdered at least 17 women between 1971 and 1983.

The missing cat matters....

So in season 1, Dr. Wendy Carr starts leaving out cans of tuna for a cat that lives in her apartment building. One day, she comes down to the basement and finds the tuna covered in ants, no kitten to be found. The internet was sure it was a hint that there is a bb serial killer in Wendy’s midsts. Well, guess what? Everyone was right!

Creator David Fincher confirmed this theory directly to actress Anna Torv, who plays Wendy. She told TV Line that Fincher wanted to hint to audiences that “there was a kid in the building who’s going around killing cats. And it’s a birth of a new sociopath that we don’t quite know about. Because that’s how it starts—with animals.”

The cat was all but forgotten in season 2, but here’s hoping for an update on that situation soon. Meanwhile, I’ll be over here not trusting any person I meet ever again.
