Talking points

  • Making history: The Gamecocks’ season opener will be the first college basketball game (men’s or women’s) played on Parisian soil. It’s the latest “first” coach Dawn Staley has been a part of at South Carolina. The list includes first national championships, NCAA Final Fours, No. 1 rankings, No. 1 recruiting classes, No. 1 WNBA Draft picks, SEC regular-season and tournament titles and more.

  • How dominant is Kamilla Cardoso?: South Carolina’s 6-foot-7 center Kamilla Cardoso is growing into one of the most regarded college basketball players in the country. She was named by league coaches and media to the Preseason All-SEC First Team and the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List, given to the best center in the women’s game. Staley said Cardoso has a newfound desire to dominate, which she did in South Carolina’s exhibition versus Rutgers, leading the Gamecocks with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

  • Dynamic guard play: Staley told media at the 2023 SEC Tipoff event that sophomore Raven Johnson and Oregon transfer Te-Hina Paopao are the best pair of lead guards she’s ever coached. They looked great in South Carolina’s exhibition game against Rutgers last month, both demonstrating their vocal leadership skills. Johnson scored seven points and had what would’ve been (if the game counted) a career-high nine assists. Paopao sank a few 3-pointers and, after working on her defense over the offseason, grabbed four defensive rebounds. Monday marks their first true test.

  • Hometown hero: Five-star Keenan High School graduate MiLaysia Fulwiley was the most electric player on the court against Rutgers. She had 16 points — 12 from 3-point range — along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals. She also had five turnovers, but those were overshadowed by her long 3s, fast-break points and sneaky assists. Staley said Fulwiley played better than she’s practiced. Will she do the same in the City of Light?

  • No longer the hunted: No longer No. 1 in any preseason polls this year, the Gamecocks are in not-so-familiar territory. But Staley welcomes the challenge. She said after the exhibition she’s enjoyed helping guide this team to achieve its full potential, even if she doesn’t yet know what that looks like.
