Alpharetta City Clerk Accepts Job In Sandy Springs

Coty Thigpen has been Alpharetta's city clerk since 2011.

ALPHARETTA, GA — The city of Alpharetta will soon be in the market for a new city clerk. That's because Coty Thigpen has been selected to serve in the same capacity for the city of Sandy Springs.

The Sandy Springs City Council at its Jan. 15 meeting approved Mayor Rusty Paul's appointment of Thigpen, who will replace retiring City Clerk Michael Casey. Paul said Thigpen is scheduled to start work in Sandy Springs in early February.

Thigpen has served with Alpharetta since 2011. Before that, she was the city clerk in Canton. Thigpen earned bachelor degrees in sociology and political science from the University of Georgia and a master's in public administration from Kennesaw State University.

She received certifications as a Municipal Clerk and Finance Officer from the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government. Thigpen is also a member of the Georgia Municipal Clerks and Finance Officers Association and the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

"We are excited for Coty, and know that this is a great move as she builds her career and works towards her goal of becoming a city manager,"said Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard. "But, yes, we are very much saddened that she will be moving on to begin that next chapter."

Alpharetta has tapped Erin Cobb to serve as its new city clerk, Drinkard added. Cobb has been training with Thigpen since last week. Cobb has been with the city of Alpharetta for several years, and has served in Alpharetta's Municipal Court, Public Works, and Finance Departments.
