ALT brings Edgar-winning 'Accomplice' online
Jun. 13—The Albuquerque Little Theatre brings its latest online production with the comedy thriller "Accomplice."
Winner of the Mystery Writers of America's coveted Edgar Award and written by Tony Award-winner Rupert Holmes, "Accomplice" has moved from Broadway to community theaters across the U.S.
ALT will stream a filmed version of the play online June 17-27.
The story begins in Dartmoor, England at the stylish weekend retreat of the affluent Derek and Janet Taylor. Both adultery and murder linger in the air. But the audience soon learns all is never as it seems in this game of trickery and misdirection. Who is the hunter and who the hunted?
The play becomes a naked duel between the playwright and the audience as to who can outsmart the other. Holmes sets up a premise, shows you your assumptions are wrong, and spends the rest of this comedy-thriller doing the same thing repeatedly.
"It's so full of plot twists that you'll be rubbernecking," director James Cady said. "It's a wonderful whodunit thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat guessing who's dead and who's not dead."
The wife intends to slip a few drops of poison into her boring husband's whiskey and soda.
But he doesn't want a drink this evening. Luckily, she has devised a backup plan, involving a foot bath and an electric hair dryer.
The discovery of the villain is "a total surprise," Cady said. "As the murder is going to happen, is it poison, the gun on the wall or the ax on the table?
"It all gets wrapped up in a tidy little bow at the end."
"Accomplice" opened on Broadway in April 1990 starring Jason Alexander, Pamela Brüll, Michael McKean and Natalia Nogulich. It was the 1991 winner of the Edgar Award for best play.
