Alumni say farewell to Hayesville building; 15 classes represented at reunion

HAYESVILLE −Alumni and guests of the graduates of Hayesville High School met in the elementary building May 6 that formerly housed the high school to say farewell to the building. It was the 84th alumni banquet.

The opening, invocation and pledge was done by President Richard Dilgard.

Fifteen classes were represented with 94 in attendance. The oldest class in attendance was 1948, with Anna Mae (Glass) Beecher being the oldest member in attendance, representing the class of 1948.  She was presented a potted flower arrangement.

Barbara (Clark) Dalton representing the class of 1963 gave a summary of her class. The class had 23 graduating members; 6 were at the banquet. It was noted the class flower was the white carnation.

Two members representing the faculty were in attendance: Gene Yeater, former principal and superintendent, and Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Cox, representing his father, Ellsworth Cox, former football coach and teacher in the Hayesville system.

It was noted from the last alumni banquet to present there were 17 alumni who died. Their names were entered into the “In Remembrance” of the Hayesville Alumni.

The committee held a 50/50 drawing in which half of the $240 went to the scholarship fund of the Hayesville-Jeromesville Alumni Association. The other $120 went to drawing winner Dan Parker, who donated the money to Ronald Patterson, class of 1963, who is facing health issues.

Dick Jones, representing the scholarship fund committee, reported the principal fund has a balance of $139,315, an increase of $875 from last year, and the actual fund balance of $177,515 is a decrease of $978 from last year.

Two scholarships were awarded in 2022 of $3,163.50 each to Hunter Schuck and Elizabeth Norris. This brought the scholarships awarded over 18 years to a grand total of $67,618.

Officers for the coming year are the same as the present year, Dilgard, president; Dick Jones, vice president; Bill Glass, secretary; Barb (Sparr) Spaid, assistant secretary; Kay (Seiss) Pauly, treasurer; Cindy (Baker) Young; assistant treasurer; and Judy (VanGilder) Weaver, historian.

The group had several local merchants who donated items to be given as door prizes. The donors were Wendy’s, Eva Treats, Hayesville Hairport, Radar’s Dairy Bar, Farmhouse Parlor & Grill, Chuy’s, Heffelfingers, Subway, Brew’d Coffee & Donuts, Endzone, Village Pointe Market, Bellstores, Oak Park Resturant and Honey Haven.

Entertainment was presented by a group of Hillsdale teachers and the meal was prepared by the Hillsdale Band Boosters. The banquet concluded with singing of the school song and was led by Dilgard.

Next year’s banquet will be held the first Saturday of May at the new Hillsdale High School.
