Alvarado, Godley have strong outings at District 10-4A track & field meet

Apr. 14—WAXAHACHIE — The Alvarado Indians and Lady Indians each finished third in their respective team rankings at the District 10-4A track and field championships Monday and Wednesday at Waxahachie Life High School while the Godley Lady Cats came in fourth in the team standings.

Waxahachie Life swept the District 10-4A track and field team district championships with 200 points on the girls side and 238 points on the boys side while Kennedale's girls and boys finished runner-up with 107 and 137 points, respectively.

The Alvarado Indians finished third on the boys side with 110 points while the Lady Indians also came in third place with 87 points, right ahead of the Godley Lady Cats' 84 points in fourth place.

In total, Alvarado finished with three individual district titles along with one relay district championship while Godley had four first-place finishes individually.

Alvarado

On the boys' side for Alvarado, the Indians had nine individuals and two relay teams post area-qualifying finishes.

Leading the way for the Indians was sophomore Lance Sansom, who was responsible for two of the Indians' three first-place finishes as he won gold in the triple jump and the long jump. In the triple jump, he had a mark of 41 feet, 10.75 inches then won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 7.25 inches.

Alvarado sophomore Cardea Collier — the All-Johnson County offensive player of the year for boys basketball and All-Johnson County newcomer of the year for football — advanced to area in two events with a third-place finish in the triple jump (41 feet, 1 inch) and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.84 seconds).

The Indians' 4x200 relay team of Payton Woolard, Camden Brown, Jaylen Bridgewater and Danny Clampitt took third with a time of 1:33.17 while Alvarado's 4x400 relay team of Colten Smith, Enrique Caravo, Bridgewater and Clampitt also finished third with a time of 3:40.62.

Other area qualifiers for the Indians include: Clampitt, third in high jump (5 feet, 8 inches); DeUndra Foster, third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.6 seconds); Aaron McGowan, fourth in the pole vault (11 feet); Caraveo, fourth in the 800-meter run (2:09.72); Kameron Webb, fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.25 seconds); Smith, fourth in the 400-meter dash (54.33 seconds); and Isaac Rios, fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (43.85 seconds).

For the Lady Indians, junior Candra Bridgewater — the All-Johnson County defensive player of the year for girls basketball — took first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.37 seconds.

All three of the Lady Indians' relay teams advanced to area, led by a first-place finish in the 4x200 as their team of Chaunacey Hammond, Brooke Bridgewater, Joslyn Jarmon and Aniyah Cross won gold with a time of 1:44.18, more than four seconds ahead of second place.

The Lady Indians' 4x100 relay team of Cross, Brooke Bridgewater, Jarmon and Candra Bridgewater placed third with a time of 49.64 seconds, just 0.54 seconds behind first place. And the Lady Indians' 4x400 relay team of Jarmon, Cross, Brooke Bridgewater and Candra Bridgewater finished third with a time of 4:30.99.

Other area qualifiers for the Lady Indians include: Hammond, third in the triple jump (36 feet, 1.75 inches) and second in the 200-meter dash (25.57 seconds); Jarmon, fourth in the triple jump (35 feet, 9.5 inches); Jaiden Wright, fourth in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches); and Bailey-Rae Taylor, fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (18.17 seconds).

Godley

The Godley Lady Cats had a strong showing as six individuals advanced to area in six different events.

Godley junior Logan Reed — the All-Johnson County co-MVP for girls basketball — won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches. It is Reed's third consecutive year to take first place in the varsity girls high jump.

Veronica Duran won a district title in the 300-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 47.22 seconds. She also qualified for area with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.87 seconds; PR).

Joining the gold medalists for the Lady Cats is Stephanie Favela, who took first in the 3,200-meter run with a PR time of 12:19. She also placed second in the 1,600-meter run (5:36; PR).

Other area qualifiers for the Lady Cats include: Riley Tanley, third in the discus (96 feet); Sadey Hughey, third in the 3,200-meter run (12:58) and third in the 1,600-meter run (5:50.01); and Kassidy Ferguson, fourth in the 1,600-meter run (5:50.37).

Godley's Zoie Switzer — the Lady Cats' lone senior for varsity track — finished fifth in the pole vault, just missing an area berth, but the 2021 regional qualifier worked her way back in impressive fashion after suffering a season-ending knee injury last spring. After more than a full year's worth of rehab, she was able to compete for part of her senior season.

For the Wildcats, Kade Sundheim took first place in the shot put with a mark of 45 feet, 5 inches and he also placed second in the discus throw with a mark of 124 feet.

Alex Duran finished third in the discus throw with a distance of 120 feet, 4 inches and Ryan Gambino placed third in the shot put with a mark of 43 feet, 6.75 inches to join Sundheim as area qualifiers.

Venus

The Venus Lady Bulldogs had three athletes qualify for area: September Crum, second in the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches); Jessica Martinez, third in the 800-meter run (2:36.92); and Ashlynn Perez, third in the 100-meter dash (12.64 seconds).
