Alvarado man charged with murder in connection with Friday shooting

Apr. 20—Alvarado police arrested an 18-year-old Alvarado man Saturday on a murder charge in connection with a Friday shooting.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at 8:14 p.m. Friday in the 1200 block of Rene Drive. Dispatch advised police that the victim, 29-year-old Nicolas Salas Jr. of Alvarado, had been shot by Eduardo Esequil Colmenero. Johnson County Sheriff's Office deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers also responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, police found Salas sitting in the front seat of his vehicle with Colmenero and two others standing outside the vehicle and/or sitting in the front seat next to Salas, according to Colmenero's affidavit.

Salas told police that Colmenero shot him in the "side and arm area after an argument ensued," according to reports. A woman at the scene also told police that Colmenero had shot Salas.

An ambulance transported Salas to a Fort Worth hospital.

Colmenero was taken into custody without incident, according to reports.

Police received word from the hospital at 2:41 a.m. Saturday that Salas passed away at 2:28 a.m. from gunshot wound injuries.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's website lists multiple gunshot wounds as Salas' cause of death and lists the manner of death as homicide.

Johnson County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Robert Shaw set Colmenero's bond at $500,000 on Monday.
