Amanda Doyle named new principal at Sanford High School

SANFORD — Amanda Doyle has been named the next principal of Sanford High School, effective July 1.

Doyle has served as assistant principal at Sanford High School and was nominated for School Committee approval at the June 12 meeting. Doyle will take over for Principal Matt Petermann, who is taking over as the director of Sanford Regional Technical Center.

“I’m extremely pleased to have Amanda as the new principal of Sanford High School,” said Superintendent Matt Nelson. “Amanda’s background as a teacher and administrator in Sanford and her administrative experience at Thornton Academy will serve her well in this new leadership role. Amanda and Matt will continue to work closely in their new positions for the benefit of students and staff at both Sanford High School and Sanford Regional Technical Center, as well as the greater Sanford community.”

“As a teacher and as Assistant Principal at SHS, I have felt incredibly fortunate to have so much support from parents, our Central Office staff, our School Committee, and our school community,” Doyle said. “I am honored to be a part of the administrative team at the high school – I see this new role as my way to give back to the many people who have helped me become the educator I am today.”

Doyle started her career at SHS in 2009, teaching English for most of her four years in Sanford before spending the next eight at Thornton Academy. Doyle took on several different roles at Thornton Academy, including serving as the director of instruction for three years and was the assistant head for faculty and academic affairs for one. Doyle received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of New England in 2019. She returned to Sanford High School in 2021 as assistant principal.

Petermann to oversee Sanford Regional Technical Center

Petermann is replacing director Kathy Sargent.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to take over as director of Sanford Regional Technical Center,” Petermann said. “I love working with my hands, and I know we have a skilled labor shortage right now that we must address. Our students have an excellent opportunity to walk out the door with a job after attending SRTC.”

Petermann started his career at Sanford in 2003 as an English teacher. Before starting his career, Petermann served in the U.S. Army from 1993 to 2000, when he joined the U.S. Army National Guard, serving until 2003. He completed his student teaching at Noble High School in North Berwick.

Petermann was the assistant director and assistant principal for SRTC for three years starting in 2014. He worked on Sanford’s Career Pathways plan and was a liaison to help bring the two schools together in their new facility. Petermann became the principal of Sanford High School in July 2017.
