Amara La Negra On Her Ideal Partner And Chispa, The Dating App That Supports The Self-Worth Of Latinx Singles

Since conquering the American market in 2018, Amara La Negra has used her platform to empower Afro Latinas while shedding light on colorism in the Latino and Black communities. The Miami-born Dominican singer vows to keep her AfroLatinidad front and center as she navigates motherhood, her personal life and a successful music career.

In an exclusive interview with Blavity, Amara got candid about motherhood, her partnership with the dating app Chispa, finding her ideal partner and several projects keeping her booked and busy for the rest of the year.

Amara added “mother” to her titles as a singer, actress and social advocate. The 32-year-old gave birth to twin girls, Sumajestad Royalty De Los Santos and Sualteza Empress De Los Santos, on March 22, 2022. Since then, she said her life has gone from “0 to 1,000” after becoming a mom.

“It’s definitely a blessing to be a mother. I am so blessed that God, you know, gave me my beautiful daughters. I am so in love with them. It’s made me mature, and it’s made me grow as a person and a woman,” Amara said during the interview.

She continued, “I’m really focused, and I think God’s timing is perfect. He gave me my daughters even though I wasn’t prepared [for it].”

Amara centers everything, including dating, around her daughters since they’re a priority in her life. However, as a single parent, she said it’s difficult when searching for her potential soulmate.

“It’s very hard to find the right person. Someone that can understand my lifestyle and the fact that I’m here now and I may have to leave for LA, New York, or wherever it may be,” she said, adding, “[I used to have free time] but my daughters have become my biggest priority.”

“But at the same time, I never wanna lose myself in the midst of things, and I never want to lose the fact that I’m still a woman and I’m still a young woman that deserves to be loved, catered to,” the “Insecure” singer added.

The Love & Hip Hop: Miami star recently partnered with Chispa, a dating app dedicated to supporting self-worth and cultural heritage for Latine singles. With a hectic schedule, Amara said she doesn’t have time to go on dates. Instead, she found using the dating app was a great way to put herself out there without the added pressure. 

“[Chispa] is a safe space where you can connect with other Latinos and people from the Latinx community as well. It’s a place where you can build the friendship, build the partnership before you get comfortable enough to meet them,” she said.

As an advocate for Afro Latino representation, Amara said Chispa was the perfect dating app for single Black men and women like herself who are open to finding love again.

“To find good partnerships, to find love, to find out all trying to seek and find something, and I saw that it was a space where other Afro Latinos can actually meet and connect,” Amara said.

She continued: “I think that it aligns perfectly with my brand because as a supporter of the Afro Latino community, I also want the community to find good partners, and this is a great way to go about it.”

So what does Amara look for in a future partner?

“I am a mother first, right? So I’m looking for someone that can understand my lifestyle. Culturally, I wanna be able to be in tune con ser una Dominicana,” she said, which translates to “being Dominican.”

“We eat plátanos, listen to merengue, you know what I’m saying? We’re very family-orientated. Everyone is going to be dancing to perico ripiao in the house, and you have to vibe with it,” Amara noted. 

While being open to dating other cultures, Amara said she’s looking for someone respectful with morals and principles. 

“I feel that the older I’ve gotten, the more mature I’ve gotten. The higher my standards have become, [they’re not] unrealistic standards but more firm standards. I’m not willing to fold on X, Y and Z; been there, done that, and that’s OK,” Amara said.

Amara said dating a man with children is ideal since he understands the “responsibilities of being a parent.” However, she’s also open to being with someone without children and taking on her daughters as their own. 

“I’m very open-minded when it comes to those things because I never want to miss out on a good man because of where I perceive my expectations,” she said. 

Aside from motherhood and dating, Amara revealed she has several projects in the works, including the fifth season of Love & Hip Hop: Miami. 

She is also working on Mira quién baila, the Spanish Dancing with the Stars franchise, a children’s book, her daughters’ clothing line and a movie featuring herself and her twin girls. 

“I keep myself pretty busy, and I am blessed to be here right now, and I’m even more happy to know that I am also doing something positive for my community by also partnering up with Chispa.”
