BLM schedules open house, seeks public input about Travel Management Plan for Cross Bar Management Area

NORMAN, Okla. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Oklahoma Field Office is seeking public input to inform the Cross Bar Management Area (CBMA) Travel Management Plan (TMP). The CBMA covers approximately 11,838 acres of BLM land in Potter County and is now the only BLM-managed land in the entire state of Texas.

Travel management planning is necessary designating and providing appropriate access to and across public lands for a variety of uses including recreation, hunting, grazing, mineral exploration and energy development. Travel management planning consists of three phases: route inventory, route evaluation, and the development of the TMP.

To provide information and receive public input on this inventory within the CBMA, the BLM will host an open house on Wednesday, April 5, 6-8 p.m. at the Amarillo Downtown Public Library, 413 SE 4th. During the open house, maps of the inventoried routes will be available for review. The public is encouraged to review these routes and make comments. BLM staff will be available to answer questions and receive comments on the project.

“We look forward to receiving public input on the Cross Bar Management Area,” said Outdoor Recreation Planner Adrian Escobar. “Information submitted at this stage will help inform upcoming route evaluations, a key stage in the BLM’s travel management planning process.” The BLM anticipates soliciting additional public input at later stages of the travel planning process for the CBMA.

WT to team with Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee to promote entrepreneurship

The Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee and West Texas A&M University will offer valuable business advice to El Barrio residents who are interested in pursuing entrepreneurship in three upcoming workshops. The “Start A New Business” series will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesdays of April, May and June.

The three-part series is presented by the Barrio Neighborhood Planning Committee, the West Texas A&M University Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business, America’s SBDC at WTAMU, and the WT Enterprise Center. This partnership gathers a mixture of business knowledge, experience and voices from various professionals in our area.

“We want our barrio families to have livable wages and have the resources they need if they choose to pursue that through entrepreneurship,” said Teresa Kenedy, Barrio committee president. “Amarillo has a ton of resources that are available to new entrepreneurs and startups. Events like this help families create generational wealth within the Amarillo community.”

The first event — set for 6 p.m. April 4 in Alamo Community Center, 1502 S. Cleveland St. in Amarillo — will cover “Starting Your New Business” and will be presented in Spanish and English. The purpose of this session is to educate participants to learn the steps needed to start a new business in Texas. This event will be presented by America’s SBDC at WTAMU and cover all aspects of starting a new business including, “Filing a DBA (Doing Business As),” “Understanding How to Collect Sales Tax,” and “How to Market Your Business.”

Dinner will be provided by Teddy Jack’s Armadillo Grill and $450 in door prizes will be given away.

The events on May 2 and June 6 will be held at the WT Enterprise Center, 2300 N. Western St. in Amarillo. The May event, “Entrepreneurs Supporting Your Business,” will feature a panel of experts discussing what they learned about starting and running a successful small business. The June event, “Financing for Your Business,” will seven different lenders with experience in banking loans, microloans, access to capital, and building trust with banking partners.

WT’s Hiranuma appointed to Energy Department Advisory Committee

CANYON — A West Texas A&M University environmental science professor has been named as an advisory committee member for a U.S. Department of Energy lab. Dr. Naruki Hiranuma, associate professor of environmental science in the Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences in WT’s Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, now serves on the user executive committee for the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory.

EMSL, located in Richland, Washington, is the DOE Office of Science’s premiere molecular sciences laboratory. Scientists in various research disciplines from around the world partner with EMSL to use world-class laboratory space, expertise and equipment for free if their research proposal is accepted through its peer-review process.

“I have benefitted from EMSL, the opportunity to use its state-of-the-art tools and the chance to collaborate with its scientists in the past,” Hiranuma said. “So I am honored and grateful to have an opportunity to help other scientists in my role as a user committee member.”

In his role on the advisory committee, Hiranuma will provide recommendations about EMSL operating policies and needs and recommend participants for proposal review panels, among other duties. Hiranuma will serve for three years. He is one of seven committee members from around the country.
