Cinemark to screen 55th anniversary of 'Heat'

Cinemark Hollywood 16 and XD, 9100 Canyon Drive, will feature TCM Big Screen Classic "In the Heat of the Night" for its 55th anniversary.

This classic film will be screened at 4 and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16, and at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.

While traveling in the Deep South, Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), a black Philadelphian homicide detective, becomes unwittingly embroiled in the murder investigation of a prominent businessman. Finding the killer, however, proves difficult when his efforts are constantly thwarted by the bigoted town sheriff (Rod Steiger). But neither man can solve this case alone.

Putting aside their differences and prejudices, they join forces in a desperate race against time to discover the shocking truth.

Exhibit, "Quinceañera Traditions," now open at PPHM

CANYON — Experience the historic and symbolic meaning of the quinceañera at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum during "Quinceañera Traditions," the newest textile exhibit on display at PPHM now through February 2023. It will feature stories from those in the Panhandle region about the tradition and three generations of ‘quince’ celebrations.

"As a rite of passage, a quinceañera, is a celebration of food, family, and faith that encompasses both the old and the new. Quinceañera Traditions celebrates the traditions surrounding a fifteen year old’s journey from girl to woman," a news release says.

“PPHM is excited to celebrate the quinceañera and its unique importance to the people of our area.” said Deana Craighead, Curator of Art. “Quinceañera Traditions tells stories from our community and has been met with tremendous enthusiasm. Over these many months of planning, I have been overwhelmed by the people I have met and their incredible openness and generosity. We would especially like to thank our exhibit sponsors Dean Boyd, Los Barrios de Amarillo, Telemundo and Amarillo National Bank. I encourage the public to visit the museum to experience it for themselves.”

Located on the campus of West Texas A&M University, PPHM features more than 285,000 square feet and over 2 million artifacts dedicated to preserving this area’s past.

'Reunion' on display at AMoA

Cannupa Hanksa Luger's "Reunion" will be on display at the Amarillo Museum of Art , 2200 S. Van Buren St., through Dec. 31.

"Reunion" is a solo exhibition at the Amarillo Museum of Art presented by multi-disciplinary artist Cannupa Hanska Luger. Utilizing performance, video, ceramics and monumental sculptural installation to tell a story about planetary interconnectivity, Luger urgently implores audiences towards relational repair — with each other, with more-than-human relatives and with the land. Traveling both backwards through history and forwards into the future, the work challenges and empowers humans to develop deeper kinship with the natural world.

In the new large-scale installation Transmutation, calcium carbonate and bone-black pigments cascade from lifesize glass Buffalo skulls acknowledging the annihilation of the American Bison, a species lost a hundred years ago and with lasting effects in the 21st century.

This exhibition also premiers the new regalia and video work, Midéegaadi, from Luger’s speculative fiction series, Future Ancestral Technologies. This ongoing project looks to customary practices in order to move culture forward. It actively incorporates science fiction theory, storytelling, Indigenous technologies, contemporary materials and the detritus of capitalism to present time-bending landscapes and to prototype new myths.

In addition to these new works, the artist presents recent large scale installation pieces and video works.

The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.

'Menopause the Musical' set for Oct. 18

GFour Productions, winners of 56 Drama Desk and 44 Tony Awards, are bringing the international hit show "Menopause The Musical" to Amarillo. The national touring production will be at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium for just one performance on Oct. 18.

Party in the Panhandle set for Oct. 21

Randall King and Kevin Fowler make their return to the Panhandle for Party in the Panhandle at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, for an outdoor show at Starlight Ranch.

With a sound steeped in the timeless beauty of the endless plains of West Texas, both gritty and graceful at the same time, King creates a sound like no other with his modern traditionalist take on country music. Johnson bringing country sound to Civic Center

Eleven-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Amarillo Civic Center.

Johnson is one of only a few people in the history of country music to win two Song of the Year Awards from both the CMA and ACMs. His 2008 album, "That Lonesome Song", was certified platinum for 1 million in sales, and his 2010 ambitious double album, The Guitar Song, received a gold certification.

In addition, he won two Song of the Year Trophies, for “Give It Away” and “In Color,” both from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association.

In 2012, the Alabama native released his fifth studio album, a tribute project to late songwriter Hank Cochran. The Grammy-nominated "Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran" paired him with Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Ray Price, Elvis Costello, George Strait, Vince Gill and Merle Haggard.

In 2013, the Nashville Scene’s 13th annual Country Music Critics’ Poll named it the year’s best album. (Two years earlier, the same poll named Johnson’s The Guitar Song as the year's best album, and Johnson himself as best male vocalist, best songwriter and artist of the year.)

Cinemark presents classic double feature

Cinemark Hollywood 16 and XD, 9100 Canyon Drive, will host a double feature of "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954) and "Phantom of the Opera" (1943) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

Perfectly blending Universal's classic monster heritage with the science-fiction explosion of the 1950s, "Creature from the Black Lagoon" tells the mythical story of a dangerous half-human, half-fish creature lurking in the depths of the Amazon.

After discovering a unique prehistoric claw fossil on an expedition deep in the jungle, scientists investigate its origins which lead them directly to a mysterious creature. Led by ichthyologist David Reed (Richard Carlson), the men try to capture the monster who has become obsessed with David's assistant, Kay (Julia Adams). Originally released in 3D, this thrilling adventure inspired sequels, TV series and more that continue to strengthen the monster's legacy to this day.

One of the most popular stories of all time, Gaston Leroux's "Phantom of the Opera" is the legendary horror tale starring Claude Rains as the masked phantom of the Paris Opera House. Following a tragic accident that leaves him disfigured, crazed composer Erique Claudin transforms into a masked phantom who schemes to make beautiful young soprano Christine Dubois (Susanna Foster) the star of the opera and wreak revenge on those who stole his music.

A heroic baritone (Nelson Eddy) tries to win the affections of Christine as he tracks down the disfigured "monster" who has begun murdering those who resist his mad demands. Inspired by the original 1925 silent version, this lavish Technicolor production remains one of the most unforgettable adaptations ever to be filmed.

USO Variety Show raises funds for local arts

WOWW USO Variety Show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, in the Grand Plaza, 401 S. Buchanan St.

The WOWW USO Variety Show will highlight history from the WWII time era and the glory of the United States military as well as the strength of America’s courage.

ALT presents 'Clybourne Park' in November

Amarillo Little Theatre, 2019 Civic Circle, plans its next production of the 2022-23 season for for Nov. 10-20 when it presents the dramatic comedy "Clybourne Park."

On two separate afternoons, 50 years apart, a modest bungalow on Chicago’s northwest side becomes a contested site in the politics of race. September 1959: Russ and Bev are moving out to the suburbs. They’ve inadvertently sold the house to the neighborhood’s first black family and ignited a community showdown.

September 2009: the neighborhood is ripe for gentrification and the house is again changing hands. This time to a young white couple with plans for demolition and a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. In a provocative nod to A Raisin in the Sun, Pulitzer Prize winner Bruce Norris takes a look at what happens when home becomes a battleground.

Lopez brings comedy tour to Amarillo

George Lopez brings his OMG Hi! Comedy Tour to the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium at 8 p.m. Nov. 5, entrances 12 and 1.

Lopez’s multi-faceted career encompasses television, film, standup comedy, and late-night television.

Lopez can be seen in his Netflix original comedy special "We’ll Do It For Half," which premiered globally over the summer. Last year, he was on tour nationwide for his stand-up comedy The Wall World.

Symphony presents 'Four Last Songs'

The Amarillo Symphony presents Strauss: Four Last Songs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19, at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, 500 S. Buchanan.

Mannheim Steamroller 2022 Christmas Tour comes to Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium on Nov. 25

Celebrity Attractions and Amarillo Civic Center is ringing in the holiday season with the return of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas. Chip Davis, founder and creator of Mannheim Steamroller, will celebrate more than 35 years of his annual Christmas concert tour. Davis said the hallmark tour will begin on Nov. 15 and run through Dec. 30, with two traveling ensembles holding performances in cities across the country. “I remember when I came out with my first Christmas album in 1984 followed by our first tour. Back then, many in the music industry said focusing on Christmas just wouldn’t work,” said Davis. “Now, over 35 years later, we are still going strong. I want to thank our fans for making us part of their holiday tradition, especially after the hardships of the last few years. Today we often see multigenerational families join us during the holidays each year.”

Davis founded his own record label, American Gramaphone, which went on to become one of the industry’s largest independent record labels. A Grammy Award winner, Mannheim Steamroller has sold more than 41 million albums, with over 31.5 million in the Christmas genre. 'Facing the Giant' on display at AMoA

Shepard Fairey's "Facing the Giant" is on display at the Amarillo Museum of Art through Dec. 31.

"Facing the Giant" is a curated series of images chosen for their importance aesthetically and conceptually, and for addressing critical topics and themes frequently recurring throughout Fairey’s career.

The exhibition is comprised of unique screen-prints on collaged backgrounds with additional stenciling and embellishments completed in 2019.

This exhibition was organized by the Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles in association with OBEY GIANT ART.

The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.

'Mostly Hits & the Mrs' Tour stops by Jan. 28

Grammy-winning Country superstar Clint Black and his wife Lisa Hartman Black are hitting the road again for year two of the “Mostly Hits & the Mrs” Tour with special guest Lily Pearl Black. They will be making a stop at the Amarillo Civic Center on Jan. 28, 2023.
