TxDOT’s Amarillo, J. Lee Milligan Inc. win Quality Asphalt Pavement Award

The Texas Asphalt Pavement Association recently congratulated TxDOT’s Amarillo District for successfully partnering with contractor J. Lee Milligan, Inc. to win a TxDOT-TXAPA Quality Asphalt Pavement Award in the Dense Graded Division, Overlay Large category for SH 70 in Roberts County.

To determine pavement worthy of this prestigious recognition, a team of evaluators visits each nominated project and rates it according to rigorous criteria, including what the riding public sees and feels. Winning projects must exhibit superior surface appearance and ride smoothness.

The TxDOT-TXAPA Quality Asphalt Pavement Awards Program is a joint effort of the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association. The program intends to encourage and recognize quality-built Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements by honoring individuals and firms excelling in production, placement, and quality assurance.

This program supports and acknowledges TxDOT, the contractors, and most importantly, those who construct Texas’ highest quality HMA projects. The TxDOT-TXAPA Quality Asphalt Pavement Awards are open to all TxDOT Districts and Texas Asphalt Pavement Association members. The TxDOT District or the TXAPA Regular Member responsible for the project may nominate it for award consideration.

The 2022 award winners emerged from a field of 60 nominees. The Texas Asphalt Pavement Association submits all award-winning projects to NAPA (the National Asphalt Pavement Association) for possible national awards recognition. TXAPA publicizes its award winners in Texas Asphalt Magazine and other association and industry publications.

Baptist Community Services announces service transition

Baptist Community Services (BCS) plans to phase out its short-term rehabilitation services at The Arbors, 1910 Medi Park Drive, by year end, according to BCS President Steve Dalrymple. All current rehabilitation patients will continue to be served until their stay – which typically lasts 14 days – is complete.

During the transition, staff members at The Arbors will be given the option to transfer laterally to a facility they choose at BCS’s Park Central campus in downtown Amarillo. They will maintain their current salary and seniority.

“Regulatory changes, market conditions and developments in the skilled nursing / rehabilitation industry have led to this decision,” Dalrymple said. “Transitioning our excellent staff from the Arbors to Park Central will make a positive impact on the care and services we provide.”

Baptist Community Services operates the senior retirement campus Park Central in downtown Amarillo. Park Central offers a broad continuum of care that includes five independent living facilities – Park Place Towers, The Continental, The Harrington, The Talmage and Plemons Court – as well as assisted living at The Moore, long-term care at The Ware and memory care at The Sycamore. BCS also operates the Amarillo Town Club fitness facility; Snack Pak 4 Kids, a food program to end weekend hunger for school-aged children in the region; and the High Plains Christian Ministries Foundation, which promotes Christian programs and healthcare services in the region.

Texas Historical Foundation to honor Cavender Family

The Texas Historical Foundation, a statewide organization dedicated to preserving Texas history, will be holding its Star of Texas event at the Hotel Drover in the Fort Worth Stockyards on March 24, 2023. The event honors individuals or businesses for their exceptional contributions towards preserving the Lone Star State’s history and inspiring its future.

The prestigious Star of Texas award is being presented in 2023 to the Cavender family and owners of Cavender’s, an iconic Tyler-based Texas company which has made important contributions to preserving and promoting Texas culture across the state and nation through its retail endeavors. Past Star of Texas award winners have included Frost Bank, J.P. Bryan, and Charlene and Red McCombs.

The Cavender family has had a long-standing commitment to the preservation of Lone Star traditions and heritage ever since their first Western wear store opened in 1965 in the small East Texas community of Pittsburg. Their entrepreneurial spirit and love of all things Texas helped the business grow to 95 stores in 15 states — each one of them promoting the company motto “It’s not just what we wear…. it’s how we live!” This successful business model has included support for statewide causes and promotion of Texas goods and products that reflect the Lone Star lifestyle and spirit. What has guided the family and the company for almost 60 years are high standards, hard work, and integrity — hallmarks of the “Texas way” of conducting business.

Though being in the spotlight was never the objective for Cavender’s, their important contributions were nonetheless first recognized in 1998, when James Cavender was inducted into the Western Image Awards Hall of Fame and later in 2019 when the Cavender family was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame. Four years later, the Texas Historical Foundation will honor the family-run business and these Lone Star legends with its 2023 Star of Texas Award exemplifying the best the state has to offer.

Sponsorships for the Star of Texas event are available at different levels. Please contact the Texas Historical Foundation for more information on the event or how to become a sponsor. Established in 1954, THF is a 501 (c) (3) organization which provides grants to nonprofits that are saving Texas buildings, archeological sites, artifacts, documents, and culture.
