The Roman Catholic Diocese of Amarillo on Monday hosted a mass to honor the late Pope Emeritus Benedict the XVI at St. Mary's Cathedral in Amarillo. Bishop Patrick Zurek presided over the ceremony for Benedict XVI, who passed away at 95 on Dec. 31. Benedict XVI retired in 2013 after serving just short of 8 years.
Chosen as the oldest pope since 1730 at the age of 78, Benedict XVI was the first pope to resign since Pope Gregory XII in 1415. He was succeeded by Pope Francis March 13, 2013.
