Amarillo Club hosts Set the Table to benefit Eveline Rivers Project

The Amarillo Club (AC) brought back Set the Table with its first annual event, held Thursday evening at the Amarillo Club located on the 31st floor of the FirstBank Southwest Tower.

During the event, approximately 200 guests perused the 15 tables, each set with a different theme of world holidays including Chinese New Year's, Thanksgiving, Diwali, Dia de los Muertos, Easter, Valentine's Day and many more.

"This is just so neat for the community to come together and showcase their creative skills, and it's for a great cause with local nonprofits such as Eveline Rivers. We are so fortunate to be able to partner with them," Amarillo Club General Manager David Schmidt said.

"The turnout has been overwhelming; people have been generous. There is a silent auction and a raffle as well, which benefits Eveline Rivers. The response has been incredible, and we hope to make this an annual event not only for the Amarillo Club, but the Amarillo community as well," Schmidt added.

According to Schmidt, the event is also a revival of the AC's annual Set the Table event that was last held more than 20 years ago. While at the re-founded event, guests participated in a silent auction and a raffle for a free one-year Amarillo Club membership. To enter the raffle, attendees brought a new coat to donate to the Eveline Rivers Project.

In addition to the donated coats, all proceeds from the event benefit the Eveline Rivers Project, an organization that has been keeping homeless and low poverty level children warm by providing winter coats, hats, and gloves for more than 40 years.

Blake Goldston, president of the Eveline Rivers Project, said that because this is the first year that the event has began again, they didn't have a set goal on how much they were hoping to raise but believes the community exceeded their expectations.

Goldston said the funds will benefit the purchase and distribution of more than 3,000 warm weather items this winter.

"The need is significant, and obviously every dollar helps. It all goes to buy coats, hats, and gloves. For little children, we also provide socks and blankets, depending on the need," Goldston said. "We wish we could satisfy every need, and I guess ultimately we wish there wasn't a need, but it is. And it's ongoing, and we thank local organizations for their support and the Amarillo Club for making us the recipient of this first annual event."

The nonprofit's president said that although 3,000 coats is the average need they see annually, the project also believes that the need will be greater this winter as the farmer's weather almanac predicts a colder winter than last.
