Amarillo police standoff with armed man ends with self-inflicted gunshot

Police confirmed an apparently armed man is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with law enforcement Friday afternoon in Amarillo.

The Amarillo Police Department announced that the area around the 1100 block of South Williams was set to reopen at about 5:30 p.m. Friday after the individual in question was located inside of the building, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police had asked the community to avoid the area earlier Friday during the incident, where the Community APD Critical Incident Response Team was called to assist.

Earlier Friday, Amarillo officers were called to a building on South Williams for a reported disturbance. Police said at the time the person involved in the incident had refused to exit the building.

The Amarillo Police Department Critical Response Team responded to assist.

The incident remains under investigation.
