Exhibit, "Quinceañera Traditions," now open at PPHM

CANYON — Experience the historic and symbolic meaning of the quinceañera at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum during "Quinceañera Traditions," the newest textile exhibit on display at PPHM now through February 2023. It will feature stories from those in the Panhandle region about the tradition and three generations of ‘quince’ celebrations.

"As a rite of passage, a quinceañera, is a celebration of food, family, and faith that encompasses both the old and the new. Quinceañera Traditions celebrates the traditions surrounding a fifteen year old’s journey from girl to woman," a news release says.

“PPHM is excited to celebrate the quinceañera and its unique importance to the people of our area.” said Deana Craighead, Curator of Art. “Quinceañera Traditions tells stories from our community and has been met with tremendous enthusiasm. Over these many months of planning, I have been overwhelmed by the people I have met and their incredible openness and generosity. We would especially like to thank our exhibit sponsors Dean Boyd, Los Barrios de Amarillo, Telemundo and Amarillo National Bank. I encourage the public to visit the museum to experience it for themselves.”

Located on the campus of West Texas A&M University, PPHM features more than 285,000 square feet and over 2 million artifacts dedicated to preserving this area’s past.

'Reunion' on display at AMoA

Cannupa Hanksa Luger's "Reunion" will be on display at the Amarillo Museum of Art , 2200 S. Van Buren St., through Dec. 31.

"Reunion" is a solo exhibition at the Amarillo Museum of Art presented by multi-disciplinary artist Cannupa Hanska Luger. Utilizing performance, video, ceramics and monumental sculptural installation to tell a story about planetary interconnectivity, Luger urgently implores audiences towards relational repair — with each other, with more-than-human relatives and with the land. Traveling both backwards through history and forwards into the future, the work challenges and empowers humans to develop deeper kinship with the natural world.

In the new large-scale installation Transmutation, calcium carbonate and bone-black pigments cascade from lifesize glass Buffalo skulls acknowledging the annihilation of the American Bison, a species lost a hundred years ago and with lasting effects in the 21st century.

This exhibition also premiers the new regalia and video work, Midéegaadi, from Luger’s speculative fiction series, Future Ancestral Technologies. This ongoing project looks to customary practices in order to move culture forward. It actively incorporates science fiction theory, storytelling, Indigenous technologies, contemporary materials and the detritus of capitalism to present time-bending landscapes and to prototype new myths.

In addition to these new works, the artist presents recent large scale installation pieces and video works.

The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.

Lone Star Ballet presents ‘The Nutcracker’

Lone Star Ballet and the Lone Star Dance Academy wraps up their annual production of Tschaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" ballet at 2 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11.

The story of The Nutcracker is loosely based on the E.T.A. Hoffmann fantasy story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", about a girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and wages a battle against the evil Mouse King.

Symphony plans Holiday Pops concert

Amarillo Symphony presents its Happy Holiday Pops concert at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, 500 S. Buchanan St.

Come enjoy your favorite holiday music with family and friends. A sparkling celebration with carols, classics, and a sing-along – an Amarillo holiday tradition.

Happy Holiday Pops is a stand-alone concert and is not part of the subscription series.

Bargatze brings tour to civic center

Nate Bargatze brings his The Raincheck Tour to the Amarillo Civic Center, 401 S. Buchanan St., at 8 p.m. Dec. 18.

Hailed this year as “The Nicest Man in Stand-Up,” by The Atlantic Magazine and a “Rising Star,” by CBS Morning, 2021 Grammy nominated comedian and podcaster Nate Bargatze is selling out shows across the world. Bargatze’s comedy is both clean and relatable, evident in his ten appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

He also appeared on Conan four times, was a recurring guest on @midnight, and had his own Comedy Central Presents in 2011. Off-screen, Bargatze was part of Jimmy Fallon's Clean-Cut Comedy Tour, and has done live shows for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait five times. In addition to touring the country as a headliner, Nate toured in arenas with Chris Rock on his 2017 Total Blackout Tour. He regularly performs at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest, and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, where he’s received critical acclaim multiple years in a row.

'Facing the Giant' on display at AMoA

Shepard Fairey's "Facing the Giant" is on display at the Amarillo Museum of Art through Dec. 31.

"Facing the Giant" is a curated series of images chosen for their importance aesthetically and conceptually, and for addressing critical topics and themes frequently recurring throughout Fairey’s career.

The exhibition is comprised of unique screen-prints on collaged backgrounds with additional stenciling and embellishments completed in 2019.

This exhibition was organized by the Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles in association with OBEY GIANT ART.

The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free.

'Jesus Christ Superstar' hitting stage at civic center

"Jesus Christ Superstar" will hit the stage at the Amarillo Civic Center at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 3 and 4, 2023.Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, a new mesmerizing production of the iconic musical phenomenon returns to the stage.

Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and helmed by the acclaimed director Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You, Into the Woods) and cutting-edge choreographer Drew McOnie (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom), this production won the 2017Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. Appealing to both theater audiences and concert music fans, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring.

With lyrics and music by Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, "Jesus Christ Superstar" is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes "I Don’t Know How to Love Him", "Gethsemane" and "Superstar".

'Mostly Hits & the Mrs' Tour stops by Jan. 28

Grammy-winning Country superstar Clint Black and his wife Lisa Hartman Black are hitting the road again for year two of the “Mostly Hits & the Mrs.” Tour with special guest Lily Pearl Black. They will be making a stop at the Amarillo Civic Center on Jan. 28, 2023.

Clint Black surged to superstardom leading the fabled Class of ’89, with five consecutive singles from his triple platinum debut album, “Killin’ Time,” reaching #1; a feat never accomplished before in any music genre.
