Texas Panhandle Student Art Show on display through May 13 at AMoA

The Texas Panhandle Student Art Show (TPSAS), the end-of-year student art exhibition to recognize all the talented young artists in the Texas Panhandle, is on display now through May 13 at the Amarillo Museum of Art.

The exhibition will consist of two parts: student artworks from grades K-12 and portfolios of artworks from high school seniors. Teachers will be installing the artworks from individual student entries as well as graduating senior portfolios.

Eligible artworks in the exhibition will be judged by Amarillo College art professors for 10 Best of Show Awards, one Best-of-Show Portfolio Award, Education Credit Union (ECU) Georgia O’Keeffe Excellence in Art & Creativity Awards to one high school and one middle school entry, and the ECU Georgia O’Keeffe Scholarship. Scholarships from the Texas Panhandle Art Education Association and the AC and WTAMU Art Departments will also be awarded to Senior Portfolio participants.

The Amarillo Museum of Art is located at 2200 South Van Buren on the Washington Street campus of Amarillo College. Museum hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

Join Panhandle PBS, Independent Lens for 'Try Harder!' live streaming event

Independent Lens is organizing a national online screening event and discussion featuring the film “Try Harder!” on Monday, May 2 at 9 p.m. The event can be accessed through the Panhandle PBS Facebook page.

The student body at Lowell High School in San Francisco is one full of high achieving, incredibly talented and stressed out adolescents preparing for the draining process of applying to colleges. Each student knows they’re competing for limited spots at their dream schools, and that every aspect of their lives, from the classes they’ve taken, their grades, extracurricular activities and more will be carefully examined by admissions officers.

In “Try Harder!” director Debbie Lum examines the reality of the college application process through the eyes of high school seniors as they live through it. Hosted live from San Francisco’s KQED, the evening will feature comedian Irene Tu with storytelling and conversation with high school students about the high stakes of educational achievement and whether college is worth the grind.

This event is hosted by KQED and Independent Lens, in collaboration with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), Basin PBS, KIXE PBS, Meaningful Movies Project, and Panhandle PBS. Discovery Center invites public to celebrate 'May the Fourth'

The Don Harrington Discovery Center is hosting its special "Star Wars"-themed event, May The Fourth, on Wednesday, May 4. There will be two time slots, 5-7 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Participants will experience a star presentation in the DHDC Space Theater, thanks to the Amarillo Astronomy Club; mingle with some of the galaxy’s most well-known characters with the 501st Legion; enjoy drink options from Leaf and Bubble (for purchase); prepare to defeat the dark side with hand-on themed activities; and learn how science is an integral part of using the Force during special demonstrations at 6:40 and 8:10 pm.

Tickets to May the Fourth Be With You are $5 per person for members and $8 per person for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased on the DHDC website and will only be sold at the door if spots are available.

Jeff Carlson Band brings Over My Shoulder tour to Amarillo

Las Vegas-based rockers Jeff Carlson Band will be performing at Leftwoods, 2511 SW 6th Ave. in Amarillo, on May 4. The group's "Over My Shoulder" 2022 Tour winded throughout the Midwest and wraps up with the Amarillo stop.

"I wrote 'Over My Shoulder' about the struggle of everyday life and pushing through to achieve your goals and dreams," Jeff Carlson said in a news release. "I struggle everyday with Crohn's Disease and as tough as it is to deal with it; it doesn't phase me when it comes to writing and performing my music for people to relate to. Music is and always has and will be a way of life for me."

The show starts at 9 p.m., and tickets are $10. The night will also have a "Star Wars" theme.

AC’s Creative Mind Lecture features noted Texas author Hollandsworth

Skip Hollandsworth, whose long-researched tome about America's first known serial killer became a New York Times bestseller, will present the 2022 Creative Mind Lecture at Amarillo College.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.

A meet-the-author reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. and includes reserved seating for the ensuing lecture. Cost is $25 per person; those wishing to attend the reception are asked to RSVP to the AC Foundation at 806-371-5924 or srleuthen@actx.edu.

Hollandsworth is a longtime writer and executive editor at Texas Monthly magazine. He spent 10 years researching The Midnight Assassin, which is the moniker 19th century Austinites assigned to the shadowy murderer. Of local interest, Hollandsworth wrote a story for Texas Monthly about Tom Brown, a high school student who went missing in 2016 in Canadian, Texas. He additionally produced an eight-episode podcast on the topic titled "Tom Browns Body."

Also on May 5, Hollandsworth will present a master class and take questions on everything from journalism and writing to publishing and true crime. All AC students are welcome to attend the master class at 1 p.m. in Badger Corner of the College Union Building on the Washington Street Campus.

Mexican folkloric group to perform at AC Concert Hall

Rayenari, a Mexican folkloric, community dance group here in Amarillo, is preparing for its first public performance of the season, which will be on Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m. at the Amarillo College Concert Hall.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, will feature Amarillo community members in "5 de mayo" commemoration day. Different performances representing Mexican pre-Hispanic and half-blood states will be featured.

WT Symphony Orchestra to perform new score with screening of classic silent film

CANYON — One of the classic films of the silent era will come to life in a screening featuring an orchestral score specially written for the West Texas A&M University Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra will give a synchronized performance of a score written by WT’s own Dr. B.J. Brooks with a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid” at 7:30 p.m. May 6 in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus.

The student musicians will then take the film on the road for a series of performances: 7:30 p.m. May 10 at the La Rita Theatre, 311 Denrock Ave. in Dalhart; 7:30 p.m. May 11 at the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway Ave. in Mesquite; and 7 p.m. May 12 in St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston. All concerts are free.

“The Kid” was Chaplin’s first full-length feature film and was a major success, finishing 1921 as the second-highest grossing film of the year and catapulting its young lead, Jackie Coogan, into superstardom.

El Barrio Lions Club to hold Cinco de Mayo Celebration on May 7

El Barrio Lions Club will host its Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Saturday, May 7, from noon to 4 p.m. in South Park. The event will feature education, services, entertainment emcee'd by 93.1 The Beat, powered by Cumulus Broadcasting, and food.

The event is free and open to the public. The Lions Club is a service club helping and organizing in sights, diabetes, childhood cancer, and, locally, first responders field support, childhood hunger, and ramp building for the disabled, to name a few.

With its motto, “We Serve,” El Barrio Lions Club has grown to more than 40 members and continues to attract people are eager to help. Their goal is to serve and feed at least 1,000 people in the community. Kreischer brings comedy tour to Civic Center

Bert Kreischer brings his The Berty Boy Relapse Tour to the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 14.

The stand-up comedian, podcaster, reality television host and actor has served as host of the television series Hurt Bert on FX as well as Bert the Conqueror and Trip Flip on Travel Channel.

He is the producer and host of Bertcast, a weekly comedy podcast on the All Things Comedy network. He is also the co-host of the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast with fellow comedian Tom Segura, and co-host of the Bill and Bert podcast with actor and comedian Bill Burr.

"Waitress" the Broadway musical will play at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium for a limited, two-show engagement in late May.
