Amarillo Fire Dept. responds to North Polk structure fire caused by cigarette

The Amarillo Fire Department quickly put out a fire at a residence on North Polk that was started by a cigarette Tuesday night.

The Amarillo Fire Department was dispatched to the fire in the 1600 block of North Polk Street Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. The first unit to arrive found a small residential structure with light smoke coming from an open front door, according to a news release.

There were initial reports of an occupant still inside, so additional units were called. Fire crews located the fire in a back corner of the house and extinguished it quickly.

No victims were found, and no injuries were reported.

The Fire Marshal's Office was called to the scene and determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials thrown into a waste basket. The Amarillo Fire Department reminds you to always make sure to extinguish smoking materials properly before discarding.
