Some time ago, Jo Moffitt knew exactly what she was doing at the next level. She was going to Western Colorado to continue her education and volleyball career. Things changed, however, and it resulted in Moffitt reopening her commitment.

As a result, she'll now be playing volleyball at the Division I level.

Moffitt, a senior at Amarillo High, signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for Lamar University on Wednesday afternoon at Amarillo High School. She'll play setter at the next level.

It's no wonder why Lamar would want her. She was AGN preseason Player of the Year entering the 2022 season. She broke the school record for single-season assists as a junior with 1,441 and was District 3-5A MVP as a senior with 1,054 assists, 72 aces, 281 digs, 137 kills and 51 blocks. Being a coach's kid and having numbers like that, anyone would want her.

The question is, how did she end up picking Beaumont as her next stop?

"The head coach at Western Colorado decided to step down, so I decided to open (my recruitment) back up," Moffitt said. "I went with Lamar because of the coaches and the girls are really awesome."

Moffitt was a part of a dominant run for the Lady Sandies. It's been years since AHS lost a district game and have made regular runs deep into the postseason, including the regional quarterfinals this past season. Now, she'll be playing in the Southland Conference against schools like Houston Christian, Southeastern Louisiana, and McNeese State.

"It's very exciting (to play at a Division I university)," Moffitt said. "I'm happy to have made it this far and (I'm grateful to) all of the coaches that helped me get here."

Coaches like her dad, Lady Sandies head coach Mike Moffitt. Mike put his dad cap on for the ceremony and handed speaking duties over to assistant coach Aubree Coleman. Coleman was moved to tears discussing the type of student-athlete Jo has been.

"Being a setter in general doesn't always get you the praise you deserve," Coleman said. "Being a coach's kid gets you even less of that...How Jo has handled both of those things from the very beginning since she was a freshman is how I know that she's going to be successful not only in volleyball, but in anything that she does in her life."

Coleman's words weren't lost on Jo. She heads to Beaumont now, but she carries all that she's learned during her time at AHS with her.

"Amarillo High volleyball is amazing," she said. "It just has a reputation that's helped me a lot and everyone here has been really supportive...being a Sandie has been amazing."
