Amateur baseball roundup for June 19: Dell Rapids grinds out 1-0 walk-off win over Alexandria

Jun. 20—HUMBOLDT, S.D. — It took until the bottom of the seventh inning, but Grant Olson broke up a scoreless game and pushed the Dell Rapids Mudcats to a 1-0 walk-off victory over Alexandria in a Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown contest shortened due to the heat on Sunday evening.

As evidenced by the final score, it was a true pitcher's duel between Mudcats lefty Dalton Lehnen and Angels right-hander Tyson Gau. The pair combined to strike out 21 batters (12 for Gau, nine for Lehnen) in 13 2/3 total innings.

Tyson Gau also accounted for two of Alexandria's three hits, with Jordan Gau recording the other. Dell Rapids managed five hits, with two coming off the bat of Kris Regas.

Alexandria (5-4, 3-2 Sunshine) hosts undefeated Winner/Colome in a Sunshine contest on Tuesday, June 21.

HUMBOLDT — Behind a two-hit combined shutout thrown by Micah Rassat and Jason Schmidt, Dimock/Emery cruised to a win in the Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown on Sunday afternoon.

Rassat struck out 10 Colman batters and walked just two in six innings before Schmidt closed out the game with two strikeouts of his own in the seventh inning. Offensively, the Raptors tallied 10 hits, with Schmidt, Peyton Nash and Sam Pischke each delivering a pair, while Chase Arend drove in a team-leading two runs on a single in the third inning.

Ian Barker notched seven strikeouts in five innings but took the loss on the mound for Colman, while Deon Entringer struck out four in two innings of relief. Barker and Chase Dewitt had the lone hits for Colman.

Dimock/Emery (5-7) is on the road at Platte for its next action on Tuesday, June 21.

HUMBOLDT — The first of three-straight walk-off victories at the Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown came as J.D. Kirchner helped Lennox slip past Parkston on Sunday afternoon.

Kirchner's game-winning RBI single completed a come-from-behind win for Lennox, which trailed 3-0 after the top of the third inning.

For Parkston, Dillon Stadlman and Spencer Freudenthal combined to strike out 11 batters through the first six innings, including five Freudenthal strikeouts among the six total outs he recorded in a two-inning relief performance. Freudenthal also had two hits (and one RBI) at the plate, which was matched by Jeff Harris and Landon Sudbeck. Brady Nolz added a hit and an RBI, as the Mudcats totalled nine hits.

Lennox was paced by Drew Sweeter, who tossed all seven innings with eight strikeouts to just two walks and also went 2-for-4 in the batter's box. Walker Hultbren and Chris Kropuenske recorded three and two hits, respectively, while Quincy Thuen and one hit and two RBIs.

Parkston (3-9, 1-5 Sunshine) hosts a Sunshine League contest against Mount Vernon on Thursday, June 23.

HUMBOLDT — After trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Flandreau rallied to cap the Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown with the event's third consecutive walk-off on Sunday night.

Mount Vernon (6-5, 2-2 Sunshine) is on the road to take on Parkston on Thursday, June 23.

With Flandreau's victory, the Cornbelt edged the Sunshine League in the inaugural Cornbelt/Sunshine Showdown, winning six of the 10 games on the weekend, including four wins via walk-off.

KIMBALL, S.D. — A three-run eighth inning provided the final margin as Kimball/White Lake outlasted South Central in a high-scoring contest Sunday night.

KWL scored its 13 runs on just six hits, as the Nationals were aided by nine South Central errors. Bryan Zeman was the lone KWL batter with multiple hits, as he recorded two singles and two RBIs. Zeman also got the start on the mound, lasting 2 2/3 innings. Caden Lenz and Ethan Gaulke had three and two RBIs, respectively for the Nationals, with Lenz picking up the win with a 5 1/3-inning relief appearance that included four strikeouts.

Ben Witt and Jaden Frank paced the Storm lineup with three hits apiece, while Hunter Van Niewenhuyse, Christian Schweigert and Rhoss Oliver each added two, as South Central piled up 17 total hits. Cole Christopherson and Aaron Sundquist combined to strike out eight batters across eight innings but yielded 14 walks.

KWL improves to 6-1 in Pony Hills play, while South Central (3-7, 3-4 Pony Hills) travels to meet the Plankinton Bankers on Thursday, June 23.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. — Despite being out-hit 13 to eight, the Plankinton Bankers squeaked past Wessington Springs on Sunday night.

Alex Loes led the Bankers' offense, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks. Chris Hill and Travis Gant each added two hits, while Cole Knippling knocked in a run on a double as part of a three-run fifth inning. On the mound, Josh Enquist pitched a complete game, throwing 131 pitches to record 14 strikeouts to just two walks.

For Springs, Terrek Butterfield and Curtis Collins had three hits apiece, with Trevor Kenobbie and Dalton Mogck each notching two. Parker Dejean tossed 8 1/3 innings, striking out 11 batters and walking nine.

Plankinton improved to 7-0 on the season, all in Pony Hills action. Wessington Springs (0-8 Pony Hills) is on the road at Colome on Thursday, June 23.

HAYES, S.D. — Four Corners racked up 12 runs between the second and fourth innings, propelling it to a win over Colome on Sunday night.

Adam Kaus powered the Four Corners offense, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Justin Lester had three runs and two RBIs and Zach Ferries chipped in two RBIs. Cooper Hainey collected the win, pitching eight innings with four strikeouts to two walks.

Colome was paced by Jake Luse, who had three hits, one RBI and three runs scored, as Dalton Baker added two RBIs. Carter Brickman was credited with the loss after pitching two innings in a start, with Baker and Shea Connot combining to pitch five innings in relief.
